TL;DR Version: Airn is an idiot, both as a student and as a mentor. She has learned nearly everything about magic that she knows purely through instinct, and constantly frustrates people with how moronic she truly is. She lacks both common sense and book smarts, and yet she can fling ice bolts from her fingers with a thought. She can learn snatches of things by digesting people.

Background:

Airn is an anomaly in the magical community. Found at the age of three on the doorstep of a magical academy, and presumably left there by her parents, she was taken in by the magic practitioners of the academy and raised as a member of the youth in the academy.

Or she was, at least, for maybe four years. At the age of seven, she devoured one of the academy's instructors for insulting her, and presumably without even using magic, at that. However, it was later shown that she'd been unconsciously utilizing the magic latent in her body to expand her stomach and hold the instructor inside. The poor woman digested away inside Airn and not only died, but set a precedent for the young girl that she really, really loved to eat, and it didn't really matter what.

Airn was confined to what was referred to as "the problem wing". Here was a place where children who hurt or killed other students or even teachers were placed to ensure they could still be instructed, but safely. However, there were yet no children like Airn in the wing. Even problematic as they were, they could still be taught, they could still change. The little pyromaniacs could be taught to only burn bad people, the kids who made people explode could be directed, even the true burgeoning psychopaths could be told how to behave.

Not Airn. Airn wasn't so evil or utterly cruel that she couldn't be taught kindess, she wasn't so dull in magical ability that she couldn't learn a single useful spell. In fact, she was extremely gifted, but not as a student. She could shoot jets of fire from her hands, shrink instructors, teleport other kids into her belly, nearly anything and everything, even things only the higher-level instructors could do. She was so gifted that the instructors were taken with her quickly, and tried to hone her to a razor-point.

Then they discovered how stupid she was. Airn was gifted beyond imagination, and yet, she was so incredibly stupid that she could not be taught properly. She did not have anything like a learning defect, or some disability, she was just not smart, not even a little. She has basic reasoning ability, is self-aware, and all the other stuff associated with being human, she is just...dumb. It's hard to say beyond that.

She would seem to be getting something, almost have the concept down, and then start thinking about food, ninety percent of the time. Then she would usually disappear another instructor once they got frustrated enough to start berating her. In this way, she got fat, but also began to subsume even more knowledge and ability as she digested her way through the staff. As it turned out, her digestive process was a conduit for magical accessibility, and if there was a special trick that an instructor could do, and that only they could do, it was a safe bet they were gone once you saw Airn start doing it.

Despite the endless trouble she caused, the academy kept her around until she was eighteen, at which time they quickly turned her out and decided that the world could deal with her fine enough. That also turned out not to be the case. Airn went on a tear and, utilizing the massive amount of raw magical ability she'd had lying dormant in her, terrorized a nearby city.

One would certainly have expected fallout from that. Not really, as it turns out. The officials of the city, fearing that the woman could wipe them out if she ever stopped being so lazy, gave her a huge expanse of land on the edge of the city, with a large house (three stories and nicely furnished) to keep her happy. Being the kind of person she is, Airn was willing to call it good as long as they also threw in free food. Not that she doesn't nip off with some citizens from time to time, but people tend to just ignore it now.

Personality:

Airn is...dumb. Yes, that's been made mention of already, but it requires emphasis. She remembers magic seemingly at random (and mostly centered around whatever gets her food at the time), she trails off in the middle of her sentences to think about something else, she sometimes uses metaphors or old sayings, then stops to think about how they don't make sense, and she sometimes rambles for minutes at a time about nothing (but usually about food).

However, she is capable, in a sense, of forming and maintaining friendships. She has a few people in the nearby city who she would consider her friends, and vice-versa, but she can be very challenging to be around for an extended period of time. It takes a special kind of person to put up with Airn, and the moment someone snaps and starts yelling at her, calling her stupid, or anything of the sort, she usually loses her patience and disposes of them. Because of this, dealing with her requires a lot of care and patience.

On the outside, Airn is rather nice girl, despite her nagging hunger and unintelligent nature. She tries to help people when they ask for it (even if it doesn't turn out like they want), does favors for her friends, and has been known to eat more than a few bullies when directed properly, getting a little more pliable with age. She is not evil, but she is very simple, and will typically sate her hunger at leisure and without much concern for being proper or consideration for others. It's less that she's good and more than she's not smart enough to be actively evil.

She is certain to frustrate academics and potential students. She cannot (and will not) understand math, science, and even the majority of high-level language. Anyone who seeks to learn the magical arts from her after hearing how gifted she is will quickly find her grating on them when they ask for her secret and she produces a bouquet of flowers for the third time, saying in her cheery voice, "There, get it?" If they ask for her spellbooks, they'll find she ate them during a rainy day when she couldn't properly get food, and that she's made her own, a collection of childish three-step drawings made when she remembers a spell.

Despite her generally decent nature, Airn maintains a childish sense of what she does and does not want, and as anyone acquainted with them knows, kids can be cruel. While she cannot plan, execute, or actively think about how to hurt someone, she may just on impulse, because it's what she wants right then, and she can be rude and mean just as much as anyone else.

Airn is, in a word, unpredictable. She is a lot of things, and hungry and dumb are at the center of them. She can and cannot be everything on the low-intelligence spectrum at once, and more importantly, she can be nice and kind or rude and cruel at the drop of a hat--usually her own hat.
