You wouldn't know it to look at him, but Allister Manning was Born Different.
Mind, he was born in the same way as the rest of us, but he was different from that point on. Probably from before that, too, but I'm rambling. The point, here, is that he LOOKS normal, but isn't. Shocking, for one of my characters, I know, but there you have it.
He doesn't look like anything special, really. Handsome enough, in an short(about 5'4) and apparently perpetually grumpy kind of way, with short, messy blue-black hair, blue eyes, and fair skin, he's almost always dressed in a basic school uniform(All black, go figure). He never seems to be available to hang out with, after school, and really has no known social life.... not that he seems to mind(much).
Of course, there's a reason for all of this. There always IS, of course, but this one's a bit different from the others.
Allister(Allis, to those who know him), is the most recent member of a magical family to come into his powers. The mages of his family have stood against all kinds of monstrous threats over the years, backed up by an ancient contract with a family of spirits, binding them together for many generations.
And, usually, this is a simple thing. The mages of Allister's family are usually women, and when they invoke their magic to the fullest, their spirits protect them, lending them their bodies and their powers. Traditionally, this has turned apparently-normal women into magical knights(And men) for their own safety. Thing is... Allister is a boy. And, well, his spirit, Alice, is a girl.
... so, when Allis invokes his magic, and his spirit takes over, he turns into a cheerful, bubbly blond gal in a frilly red dress, with stockings. Alice is about his height, obviously curvier, with long, blond hair, the same blue eyes, and a perpetually cheerful, friendly disposition.
Don't let that fool you for one second, though! Alice is a Guardian Spirit, and bonded to a mage, for life. She may look innocent and helpless, but she's anything BUT. When Allis becomes Alice, she's much stronger, faster, and more competent, magically speaking. Forget butterflies and bees, Alice moves like a hummingbird and hits like an eighteen-wheeler on steroids.
Which, really, should be enough. The thing is, though, that these days, it's not fighting monsters that Allis' family does. No, that's not common at all. These days, they mostly mediate disputes and keep the peace. Of course, it turns out that the easiest way to keep the peace is to find the hungriest monster, and... well, feed it. As most of these monsters have a taste for human flesh, well... you get the idea. They're all too happy to have Allis or Alice for supper, and, well, he may grumble, but it's not exactly unpleasant... besides, some monsters need to be EATEN, instead!
Still, the guy needs a social life! But hey, maybe things will calm down enough, or he'll meet someone who understands... right?
For ease of reference, blue is Allis, and red is Alice.
