Berenike the Queen
It was in the year 4327 on the day of summer solstice when Isis gave birt to Berenike. Nobody really knows if her father really was the famous Pharao Sylnek I. or just another human but due to the fact that Berenike was mostly human suggests this at least Pharao Sylnek I. proclaimed her to be his child given to his kingdom as Isis gift. Everyone knew that he had hoped to get a sun but he loved his daughter from the day he saw her the first time.
While growing up Berenike had everything a young girl could imagine to get but her father did also teach her the problems in politics both in the royal dynasty as in foreign politics. Being that close to the most powerful person in the kingdom made her a target for the palace intrigues and other kids avoided her. She was never a happy child always in the center of attention as the only child Sylnek I. ever had.
Then destiny’s tides turned on the day her father died. Berenike was sleeping in her king size bed when suddenly her maid Leonie stumbled into the room without even knocking. “Milady Berenike get um quickly something horrible happened.” She screams at the dizzy princess.
Berenike opend her eyes slowly still caught in her dream where she was dancing with a stunning man while her father was clapping his hands for them while nobody else was present, no servants no slaves just her father the man from her dreams and herself in a beautiful colored dress. “W – W – What do you mean horrible?” she takes a look out of the window. “It’s still dark outside couldn’t that wait till morning?”
Slowly Berenike managed to get her mind where it was supposed to be and looked at her friend and servant a bit puzzled first then worried after gulping down she nearly whispers her question to Leonie “What happened that you wake me up at night?”
Leonie now carefully takes Berenikes hand to hold it. “Milady your father, the rumors say he’s dead.” She says looking up in Berenike’s golden eyes. “What? Is this true?” Berenike yelps and jumps out of her bed still dressed in nothing more than the toga she had put on for the night. She quickly starts running through the palace followed by Leonie.
When standing in front of her father’s chamber she gazes angrily at the guards that dared to attempt to stop her and rushes into the room. She quickly spots about a dozen people standing around her father’s bed all of them tilt her head towards her as she enters the room she couldn’t take a look on him at him with all those people in her line of sight.
Herself being taller than every other average man she looked quite impressive clearly showing the authority her father had taught her for years. “What is wrong with the Pharao?” she asks in a commanding tune of voice. “Milady!“ everyone of them quickly bows down before one of them who Berenike could identify as her father’s personal doctor takes the word “It’s a shame but he’s dead, we couldn’t do anything for him.”
Later stories would tell that Berenike was strong and didn’t even start crying but reality was different. She raises her head up and points to the door. “Go out. ALL of you I want some time with him on my own.” She waits with an expression on her face that was fit for a princess until she’s alone with her father’s corpse.
Then she slowly walks over to him seeing his pale skin whispering “No no no no this isn’t true, he can’t be just gone from one day to another one.” She hops on his bed but the covers are cold as his body and she tries to shake him trying to wake him up but he was dead.
After about half an hour she somehow was clear enough in her head again to search for signs of an unnatural death, she quickly checks his mouth, taking a look at the tongue if it was black then searching for signs on his fingers and toes but as she couldn’t find anything she sighs a bit. At least she didn’t have to do an investigation about his death.
Leaving the chamber she can see the doctors and her servant Leonie still waiting in front of the door. She takes a deep breath “The pharaoh is dead, take care to tread him well.” Then she makes a gesture for Leonie to follow her back to her room. Although she clearly didn’t take the guards into that command they still followed her over to her room where they took their new position. She noticed their faces as she’d have to check out their loyalty before making them her personal guards.
The next days passed by pretty fast as everything follows a certain protocol and though Berenike tried to keep all strings in her hands she still can’t exactly say what happened in the week when her father died and she took his crown.
Live got quite boring now for her as she was seperated from all her rare friends she had as princess and she was more a puppet for her father's advisors than a real Queen. After about a year she had enough of them and slowly she started to get other people she trusted in higher positions. Of course the advisors didn't like that at all but they had to be quiet in order to keep their positions. Berenike got used to make her own decisions and got quite popular with her people due to her just and fair decisions not caring about the old priviledges or traditions.
But there was one more thing that the priests and advisors did not even know about. Berenike managed to find a way to get out of the palace to
listen to the people in the city, what they were talking about, what they worried about.
Everything was good until one day a servant from the palace recognized Berenike and broke her disguise in the city. Of course from now on this was the number one topic both in the city and in the palace. The high ranked and better situated were disgusted by their queens action but it was even worse when the high priests started to spread the rumor that Berenike had an affair with a peasant from the city.
Berenike didn't show up in public or in palace for about two weeks, of course the people admired her even more but her fate in the palace was sealed. The priests did lock her in the palace and started watching every step she took out of her chambers.
She didn't feel comfortable in her new position being nothing more than a puppet moving and acting as commanded and she soon stared again to search for a possibility to get back to the city planning to bring down the priests along with everybody supporting them.
She managed to get out of the palace with the help of a few of her loyal guards and she tried to recruit people from the city. But as soon as the priests recognized her being out of her chambers. And they started scanning through the city the next day. Berenike wasn't the person hiding behind the lines and sent people to die, trying to defend her and fights in the first raw. At a point when the streets were covered in blood and the Queen and her loyal soldiers and citizens were just about to enter the temple when Berenike commanded them to stop fighting "Hold on my friends, my brothers and sisters, lets rest for a moment." she says with strenght in her voice and her eyes shining, "After all this is the temple and palace of our ancients. We would loose their respect if we spilled betrayer blood on holy ground." She eyes the men and women standing in front of her, their injuries, the pain in some of their eyes but what surprised her most was the unbroken faith in their eyes making it clear that they wouldn't stop fighting for her even if death was inevitable. Suddenly she gasps for air when her eyes spot a child not older than 5 or 6 years holding a knife in her hands wearing a bloodstained dress and she suddenly feels guiltyand even ashamed for every person fighting and dying in the cruel battle just to put her back on the throne and something broke in her. She turned around facing to the walls surrounding the temple. She knew that inside they'd be prepared for their attack, it would take hundreds of lifes to break the defenses in there. She sighs and clings the sword on a retainer on her back and turns to her people again, "Listen to me carefully, I'm going to give those betrayters a final chance to put down their weapons." She takes a deep breathe and her eyes turn to a point somewhere in the distance "But whatever happens don't act without my order and only my orders."
Then she turned around and stepped to the front gate, knocking at the door she raises her voice, "Open the door, now, I have to make you an offer." It took several minutes but finally the priests seemed to have agreed that it was worth listening to what the queen had to say and they carfully opened the door to let Berenike in.
An escort of 12 guards led the queen to the high priest who was waiting warily what Berenike would've to say. Closing her eyes the queen took another deep breath before slowly pulling her sword from her back, then she drops it in front of the high priest. "I submit to you, for the thousands of people in this country, they deserve better." she sighs and slowly shakes her head, "But I will never... never kneel in front of you or anyone else of you bretraying bastards, may Anubis judge you when your time has come."
That way the fights ended and Berenike was imprisoned, for several weeks they tried to break her, she was beaten, they gave her no food, nothing to drink, some of the guards raped her while other looked away and every day the high priest did get to her cell and asked her if she'd kneel in front of him, what would practically making him the legal ruler in front of everyone's eyes. But even weakend as she was, she was still unbroken, undefeated, proud and with a queen's grace. Then after weeks and months they decided to get done with it and agreed that they didn't have use for her alive.
The weeks in prison did neither break Berenike nor the people's adoration for her so the priests knew they had to be careful and sublte about her death, so they decided to poison her with something that'd make it look as if the queen had a terrible fever, nothing unusual in that time. Of course people asked to see her when they heard their queen was ill and some doctors assured that the priests had nothing to do with it. Berenike felt constantly worse, but even people's prayers couldn't help saving the queen.
Only one week later, Berenike died with the knowledge that this hadn't been a normal disease, she never got ill but she kept her mouth shot cause enough blood had been spilled in her name, the priests were smart enough to give her a proper funereal and the people honored her a last time with the saddest and greatest celebration ever seen in history.
Berenike the Undead
Berenike wasn't allowed though to pass into the world of the dead, her task wasn't done, yet and people still did put their faith in her what did put her eye to eye with the gods. The same night they had closed her tomb she woke up again, it had been one week after she actually died and she was propperly prepared for her afterlife meaning her intestients were stored in canopic jars, she was blind, weak and couldn't move. Barely able to do anything she just laid in her sarcophage for days thinking about her situation and what to do about it, days turned into weeks and weeks turned into years and decades. Slowly the people who knew her as queen and always admired her as the true queen started to die and their children's children grew up with the legend of the queen that died for her people. Of course the days of their lives the priests tried to wipe her from people's memories. Of course there was anotherone to take the throne but he was just a puppet on strings for the priests and was barely respected by the people.
Berenike's abilities
Living Bandages
Be aware of the old bandages wrapped around her body. She can control them and use them to tie you up and don't expect to be able to rip theses thousand year old cloth as it is filled with Berenike's unholy might that dripped out of her body over thousands of years. Sometimes they even seem to act on their own will....
Undead
As an undead she doesn't have certain needs the living do have in general, such annoying things as breathing warmth or light. She can't get ill, though she might look a bit pale. She doesn't like the sunlight after getting used to the quiete darkness of her tomb for an eternity but she wont turn into dust when going into the sun seeing no reason to it.
Chitin friends
While laying in her tomb she got familiar with some insects sharing her room. She made them her friends and after leaving her tomb they might follow her if she doesn't tell them to do something else as biting and envenom some unfriendly guests.
Malady of Mind
Thousands of years laying in Darkness can do certain damages to a human brain. Luckily this didn't happen to Berenike instead her mental strengh is far above the normal human level and allows her to "hear" the thoughts of other persons when talking to her, otherwise she would have a hard time understanding those who enter her rooms before she grinds their corpses.
Soul gathering
After she entered the realms of death for a short time she can now see peoples souls the worse thing about it is, that she is able to grab them, too. She uses the ability to get her victims souls when their dead to trap them into her crown's diamonds.
Restoration
You can't really call it healing but she can restore her body by consuming flesh if it is a whole human body stretching her belly or if she rips them into pieces doesn't really matter to her the result is the same.
She dislikes ....
Others would call it her weaknesses, to make it short Fire and Water can do serious damage to her undead flesh and she avoids them wherever she can.
