Calda

Alt of Solan. Profile under construction.

Reference image: x
This isn't quite accurate, but it gives a good image of her clothing and hairstyle. Her attitude isn't this flamboyant however.

Note: Just to give credit where credit is due, some of the concepts of this character, mostly those having to do with the city Laputa, are taken from the movie Tenku no Shiro Laputa (known as Castle in the Sky in the US). If you haven't seen it yet, for the love of God go watch it!

Vital Stats:
Name: Calda
Age: 39 (looks ~17)
Race: ~90% human, ~10% Laputan (D'ni)
Class: Firelord mage (same type of magic as Solan)
Secondary Element: Wind

To begin, a bit of legend...
In ancient days, or so people say, there were many great civilizations. Mesopotamia, birthplace of cultivation and knowledge. Egypt, domain of the pharoahs. Vikings, raiders of the great seas and terror of whatever land they reached. And then there were those older, greater civilizations, said to possess power and technology beyond even our modern world. Atlantis, of course, is the greatest of these, a city floating on the great sea, a center of learning and wisdom... and also a power so great that the cataclysm it sparked sank the entire city in the space of a single day. But, there were other civilizations just as powerful and wise as Atlantis, cities deep beneath the earth, high upon mountains... and even in the air itself.
Laputa, the crowning gem, capital of a sprawling civilization of cities kept in the air by magic alone. Its cities were beautiful, and Laputa most of all... a center of knowledge, like Atlantis, and home to the king's gardens and palace. The greatest of all the worlds' mages studied and usually dwelt within Laputa or one of its daughter cities, and it was their magic, their strange power to manipulate the elements around them at the most fundamental level, that allowed the civilization to fly. At the same time, Laputa itself was a mobile weapon, its mages' greatest power concentrated into the Thunder of Laputa, a single weapon so powerful that it entered into the mythology of countless religions...
Luckily, Laputa remained mostly peaceful, the Thunder built by its first king, an ambitious man who desired to craft an empire over the ground below. This ultimate of magical powers was only ever used a few times, before the people rose up and dethroned the ambitious man. Though a few later kings sought to revive the power called by some Indra's Arrow, the floating city has refrained from war, and much peaceful commerce and teaching has gone on between sky and land. The mages built many flying machines, powered both by magic and their technology, and mingled with the humans. Legends from those days speak of the Laputan people as exceptionally beautiful, with fine, almost frail features, and it is said that they lived exceptionally long lives, often far outliving even the children of their human lovers.
In the end, however, Laputa was forever abandoned. Legends give conflicting accounts. Some say that there was a terrible accident, and one of the cities fell from the sky, and so the people abandoned their cities to prevent such a tragedy from reoccurring. Others say that an evil king revived the Thunder of Laputa, and the city was deserted to prevent any from ever unleashing such destruction. Still more believe that the Laputans simply found themselves losing touch with the nature that had fueled their powers, and desired to regain their balance. Regardless, the mages destroyed their flying machines, and though the city itself still remains hidden among the clouds, its dusty halls are long since emptied.

The woman herself
Calda is, although distantly, a descendant of the last royal family of Laputa. She is also a mage, one in keeping with the tradition of the "elemental" mages, whose powers depend on a near-perfect understanding of the four elements that compose the world and manipulation of those elements. (For more details on the source, see Solan.) She is a "firelord" mage, one who is most talented at manipulation of fire, and is also skilled in air magic. In addition, she holds another power, a different kind of magic discovered by Laputan sages eons ago. The "Sacred Light" of Laputa is a magic of its own, a more proper magic requiring a focus and a chanted incantation, but can create a myriad of effects. It is the Sacred Light that magnifies and perpetuates the magic that keeps Laputa flying even to the present. Calda, being of royal blood, has been trained since her youth in both kinds of magic, and the Sacred Light is at all times her protector.
In terms of appearance, Calda is youthful and fairly well-kept. Her clothes are a bit on the common side, but well-made and always clean. The above picture gives a good general idea of her usual outfit, save that the half-top is instead a short cloak fastened over one shoulder with a brooch bearing the royal family's crest. Her hair is also mostly like in the picture, in terms of shade and style. Her eyes are a bright green. Her facial structure is much finer than normal humans, due to her Laputan heritage, lending a refined and fair look to her features, far more so than even the elves.
For the Laputans indeed were as people described them of old, fair of feature and long of life. In fact, they were not fully human either. Predating both Atlantis and Laputa was an even older civilization, hidden in a cavern beneath the American southwest. The people of this civilization were the D'ni, also called the Ronay, and had come to this world from their own dying universe. Though weak of eye, the D'ni had incredibly fine features and lived often for hundreds of years. This heritage has trickled down through the ages, filtered through many interbreedings with humans, giving Calda a degree of longevity and fine bone structure. There is also a further heritage passed down by the D'ni, relating to how they entered our world from theirs in the first place... but that is not a secret given out to most...
Calda's personality is fairly relaxed given her noble heritage. Although she does possess the heredity title "Localda toel ul Laputa" marking her as a trueblooded heir to the throne, she will only use that title when seeking to impress someone, generally someone she doesn't expect to encounter more than once. Otherwise, she's fairly open about the fact that she's from Laputa, and generally friendly towards others. At the same time, she has undergone the training to become vore-capable, and is quite willing to use that ability... Mainly, Calda is out to live and to learn, part of her mind always set on acquiring some secret of her ancestral race. Being so drawn to this one secret has made her a sort of seeker of secrets, a lover of lore and drawn to searching through ruins and old records in search of anything hidden, especially of the mystical persuasion. Her ultimate dream is to one day find the deserted city of Laputa, to learn the secrets that were not passed down as far as her. And perhaps, to rule it? Or perhaps not. She truly does have no interest in the Thunder, but maybe if the throne's pretty enough, or there are enough secrets...

Worldly Possessions
Calda tends to travel pretty light, living from day to day where food and other essentials are concerned. Everything she has is in a simple cloth bag she can either carry or wear over one shoulder. Generally, this consists of a tome or two, plus a modern (for the time period and location) novel of some kind, mainly to keep her mind occupied through reading. She also sometimes carries a few magical trinkets, a potion or two in case she needs it, and of course at all times her pride and joy, her staff. This magical implement has been passed down in her family since her ancestors left Laputa. The shaft is carved of birchwood, a pair of twigs at the end framing the focus. The focus itself is a crystal of a mineral called aetherium, discovered by the Laputans and the source of their other magics. Having aetherium at all is necessary to call upon the Sacred Light, and so she can't cast spells without it, though she can still use her elemental magics. The crystal also serves as a superior focus for elemental casting, letting Calda achieve the same effects with far less mana expended. The staff itself is in fact an heirloom, comparable to the "regalia" of certain ancient kingdoms, and is a highly valuable tool... invaluable to her search for secrets. It is never not by her side, even in sleep, and she is always quick to recall it to her hand if they become separated.
