When you have a clutch of eight, odds are there's going to be a bad egg amongst them. Carter just so happened to be that bad egg and, regardless of his childhood, he was destined to grow up a slightly sadistic bastard.
Carter wasn't always outgoing about his desires. Growing up in a peaceful clan, he couldn't do much without being severely reprimanded. So most of his childhood was spent trying to get attention, being a drama king, and being sullen about everything. It wasn't until puberty hit that he came out of the torturing closet.
An encounter with some malevolent spirits known as the Tamesi sealed his fate. Smoke-like beings, three decidedly female and three decidedly male, the sextuplet group seduced Carter to serve them in exchange for power. Carter stores the souls of the ones he kills within a red diamond necklace, giving it to the Tamesi so they may feed. If Carter is unsuccessful, they compensate by draining energy from his own soul. Still, it's a small price to pay if he'll gain magic.
Leaving his birth swamp, he now lives in an abandoned mausoleum where the Tamesi dwell, going out during the day to secure souls for his masters.
Oddly enough, Carter can also be a decent guy, if a little moody. It's not all about torture with him, as long as he gets attention.
