The Darkwing swarm,
They're a hive of fairies living in the old abandoned ruins of a human clan known as "Dark walkers" and despite popular belief, that is in fact where the "dark" in their name comes from, not their wing colouration, as it can vary vastly, like most fairy clans.
The reason the dark winged blonde is most associated with the clan is the fact they are the most common scouts and "soldiers" of the hive, so are seen most often by outsiders, despite the common misinterpretation there is actually a vast range of wing colours, hair colours and such in the hive. The colour of a fae's wings depends on her parents and as do her eyes and hair, hair and wing colour usually indicated elemental affinity. I.E one with blue wings is usually a water or ice-fae
On average, like many fairies, Darkwings are 6 inches tall. Their taste is slightly bitter, so in the wild, many creatures believe they're poisonous, Often humans and other demis believe they're toxic to eat as well, so that helps aid in their survival.
They tend to grow their own foods and farm small animals, and insects, to eat and use for potions and materials, They make excellent drinks, especially honeyed mead, from plants around the ruins and their part of the "Infinate forest" of
Ardith_Prime, they often like to use some of the sweet mixtures in traps for catching the odd prey, or baiting away attackers.
Their biggest predators are small carnivorous plants, and human sized predators.
Other than potions, they also make a good range of dusts, which are like potions, but are inhaled, and can spread over a wider range. Though some dusts are for "recreational use".
Groups you may come across:
Scouts: Usually a group of 3, they wear robes or sometimes leather and carry small daggers made from iron or steel, or sometimes needles.
Soldiers: Comes in groups of 3, 5, 10 or bigger platoons. Often wear armour made from thimbles, bottle caps, metal strips. sometimes Kevlar scraps. They often have any of the following: Glass or tin-tipped spears, mini bows, crossbows or guns, needle swords or toothpicks and bottle-cap shields. They have other weapons too, but that's the most common array, salvaged from the bigger world. When possible elite warriors make their own gear rather than modify it.
Fairy combat types:
Common:
Swordswoman: Often wearing armour made of knitted materials, or occasionally tin or aluminium salvaged from the larger worlds, these girls along with Spearwoman make up the swarm's primary melee force. they often use needles or sharpened metal combined with hand-crafted handles as short or long swords. They may use small shields made from bottle caps or cut from cans.
Spearwoman: The other most common type, they're virtually identical to their sword wielding counterparts except their weapons, two handed spears or halibeirs, often made from wooden sticks or toothpicks then tipped with a tin, aluminium or bronze point. Sometimes a blade is added to the spear to make a Halibeir for chopping action, they're best used against flying opponents or mounted or as first-wave infantry, where the extra reach keeps the enemy away from responding.
Rangers: The rangers are often at the rear and are trained with crossbows or bows to deliver a strike from the distance. Their arrows are usually an opening volley and may even be lit on fire or poison tipped at times. Their bows are usually either hand crafted or made from lollipop sticks with rubber bands, or the crossbows are made similarly using a bottle cap to hold the sticks in the cross formation. their armour is usually lighter leather or flax based.
Mages: Mages are usually found at the back with the rangers, providing combat buffs to allies and firing elemental spells at foes. Some mages may fly above and rain attacks down like a living gunship or create mana weapons. Their strongest elements are usually based on their wing colour and hair, signalling their Elemental affinity. Mages usually wear simple cloth robes and sometimes also carry staffs. Stronger mages may upgrade staffs with elemental crystals and runes.
Advanced classes:
Medics: Of course they're one of the most important ones the fairy fighters have. While not trained for combat beyond having a surgical knife and advanced biological knowledge they're strong with healing magic and medical knowledge, able to save lives and aid comrades, they can also remove debuffs and curses and provide buffs in combat. They try to avoid being near the fighting when possible however.
Musketeers: Musketeers are the more elite and powerful rangers, often slower firing than the bow or even crossbow, the musket however packs as strong and accurate punch. Each musket is made by the fairies themselves perfect for dealing with any sort of enemy thanks to the speed of the metal balls fired. For close ranges the musketeers have a bayonet on the rifle as well as pistol and a sword, and they're armoured with a thin metal vest covered by a tabard with the clan's coat of arms on. Some also wear musketeer style hats. (and have cute french or english accents.)
Cannoneers: These fae have the guns that are simply too large to just carry, wheeled weapons closely akin to real human handguns (and sometimes even rifles). They use real world bullets salvaged from wherever the guns themselves were obtained. Often these guns are bolt action or revolvers, so they fire reasonably fast, but take a while for the fairies to reload. These cannons usually take several girls to move or even trained work-lamia. these cannoneers are one of the more serious threats to human sized attackers, and are often used either in towers or on wheels for defence or sieging cities or enemy camps. keepign back they usually wear simple cloth clothing. In close quarters they have single or double shot flintlocks, often needing protecting.
Demolitionists: Primarily either prized alchemists, or rampant pyromaniacs the fairy demolitionists are the true experts when it comes to laying traps, blowing up walls or making the ammunition musketeers and cannoneers rely on. They're often armed only with a simple flintlock and dagger, but usually with a large array of explosives and incendiaries, they're more than happy to throw these at targets. Their clothing is a light metal or kevlar vest and metal helmet, to protect themselves from shrapnel of their own devices.
Paladins: The holy warriors who're chosen by the temple themselves. they often carry large (for their size) battle axes, or mauls and have healing magic. given the best armours and gear they can be afforded paladins often have a large ego and end up being headstrong dealing with foes. they also have a nice accompaniment of light magic.
Specialist classes:
Palace guards: The best of the best, often wearing royal purple, black and gold armour, the Darkwing royal guards are the most elite assigned to protect the royal family of the clan. it's said one royal guard is worth 20 warriors, however there are only about 16 in the entire village.
Heros/adventurers: While not officially part of the Fairy military, these people go from the adventures seeking dame and riches. what adventurers can and can't do and how they're geared is a case-by-case basis.
