Diarmuid hadn't been powerful or noteworthy in his first life; weak demons rarely lasted long in the world and Diarmuid knew he would be no exception. From the moment he was able to become cognizant of things, he felt this deep-seated resentment towards everything-- from his stronger siblings to his father that disowned him for being the weak runt. Despite knowing that any day could be his last, he tried to make something for himself against all odds. Of course, being weak, he couldn't do much. He lived a lonely life of solitude and managed to survive for fifty summers before being devoured by a more powerful demon.

 His second life started upon entering Yomi. He had no idea what to expect other than a "true" end to his existence... Somehow, he managed to keep his head down. Nobody was interested in him; nobody wanted him. He became a steward for a less-than-prominent demon lord. They both knew there would be little chance for any upward advancement for the demon that Diarmuid served, but the small bit of protection was worth it. Together, they attended galas and together they were often asked to leave, since His Lordship wasn't quite lordly enough.

It was by mere happenstance that Diarmuid happened upon the beginnings of a deity summoning portal. He knew about them; his Master was always going on about wanting to find one, about how lucky it would be to stumble upon it. It was another chance in the "real" world-- a fresh start. He never expected to find one, let alone find one whilst completely unattended! What was he to do but take up this glorious opportunity for self-promotion? No more would he be anyone's servant. No, now the fools that summoned him would be his servants! Really, it was a no-brainer to go back to the living world. A free re-start. He would be so much stronger!

Except Diarmuid missed the part where a deity's power is based in their followers. Despite feeling the strength course through his veins, despite being able to move mountains and despite everything, he was still bound. He couldn't move from where his followers-- humans-- had summoned him. He was to protect the land and its inhabitants... It was mind-numbingly boring. All he wanted was the freedom to do as he wished without having to depend on those humans to stay alive. They needed him and, by the deital contract, he needed them. It was all miserable.

 Time was meaningless to him now. Decades passed and it was all just the same mundane thing: "Please protect us, Diarmuid! Keep my sons safe on their hunting trip! Please protect our crops! Keep the neighbouring nations from coming for us! Please, Diarmuid!" They held festivals in his name four times a year; one for each season. He was well-fed, but he wanted more. No, he needed more. And so he hatched the plan to slaughter his people, harvesting all of their souls and using the catastrophic event to free himself from the confines of godhood. What became of him then, history knows not. But Diarmuid was free, and with this new freedom came a power so grand, so taboo and forbidden, that he would tell none of its origins...
