When the parliament of fate decided the way existence should order itself, the numerous 'modus arcani' were created as templates of archetypal figures of mortal fiction. As the first universe invariably splintered into innumerable offshoots, each bore its own 'diluted' copies following in vague semblance to the first archtypes. So it was; the forces of fate ensured their work of bestowing prophecy would be simplified, no matter how many times reality splits itself. The first of the modus arcani is an always familiar face; that of a young, naive and dauntless hero. One who is thrust into a journey of personal growth and discovery — a journey that will decide the fate of the nation, realm, universe, etc. Though many subsequent planes have produced several incarnations contemporary to one another, the wholeness of essence abound in the First only ever allowed for one. One living embodiment, an avatar of good, that is regenerated into a new incarnation upon their demise. After a long and storied tenure, the former Squire passed on and thus invariably relinquished her mantle to the current; Paige, of clan Demur.
Northeast of the Divide (see: Planan) beyond the squat range of the Newbury Hills, lies the confedaration of the Brachi Clanlands. For centuries the untamed lands have been policed with the aid of the Vados' Inquisition, or just The Inquisition colloquially. The Clanlands are divided into several provinces, with the northernmost, Regalia, bearing the capital city of the same name. Being the seat of power, Regalia is also the home of the quasi-political and religious leader The Principal Hierophant who works in conjunction with the military commander-in-chief, the Al-Cleric. Despite the strict and authoritative social order enforced by the governing body, many of the other providences are gripped by distinct prevailing orders of their own, established by the various artisan and mercantile clans inhabiting the 'Clanlands'. The warrior-merchant clans of Alfitz were famed throughout the world for their skills in craftmanship, sword arts, and overland navigation. Many members of the inquisition's knightly Orders share loyalty with a clan.
