From her birth, Etsuko was marked as being different from the people around her, with snowy white hair and striking red eyes. Her mother, unable to raise her child by herself, left her on the porch of the nearest shrine. The kindly priest took the child in, giving her the name 'Etsuko' because of the way she laughed when he held her. Later, she would adopt the shrine's name as her family name.
It seemed almost natural that Etsuko would become the Asagiri Shrine's miko once she was old enough. Living with her 'grandfather', she literally grew up on the premises and was helping out ever since she was tall enough to hold a broom. Today, Etsuko works part-time at the shrine, using her modest wages to pay for her college classes. Oh, and by night she also hunts down and eradicates evil spirits.
Etsuko was born with the ability to see things that other humans can not; she can see the realm of the incorporeal, of the spirits and shades. To be able to view such things was a harrowing experience for the young girl... only through meditation and training could she learn to cope with the things that she could see. Her 'grandfather' was her primary instructor, himself a retired exorcist. But to witness the pain and sorrow of the ghosts of those unable to move on motivated her girl to do something about their misfortune. Now, Etsuko studies criminology in college, preparing for the day when she'll open her own freelance supernatural detective agency. In the mean-time, she generally works pro-bono or for small donations to her college fund. It's hard... but it's worthwhile.
An expert in seals, charms, and supernatural barriers, Etsuko combines practiced study with practical hands-on training, making her a very dangerous threat to members of the supernatural community. She has a very high degree of purity, making her both a tempting target... and a very dangerous one, as well. Most dangerous of all are the Asagiri Bells, a relic of the shrine, whose gentle chime is anathema to evil. The humble miko has proven to be the undoing of many demons... some of them surprisingly strong ones.
Etsuko is a bring and friendly girl, with a warm smile and a loving heart. She is respectful and polite to those around her. Though she is soft-spoken by nature, her words carry a gentle but unyielding quality to them. She does what she does not for the money (and in fact, often goes without payment), but rather for the love of the people around her. Moveso even then that, it is out of pity for the pain and suffering of the spirits and demons that she exorcises. Etsuko Asagiri has an awesome destiny before her in the coming war of that which is pure against that which is unclean. It remains to be seen, however, which part she will play... that of the savior or of the sacrifice.
