tl;dr: The Hindu God(dess) of Love inhabiting a mortal girl's body. Kind of tempermental and likes to throw their weight around but really wants someone that is willing to put up with them and possibly risk devouring to stay by their side.

Once upon a time Kama was a benevolent god that only wished to spread the joy of love to others. He enjoyed his work, he felt that he made the world a better place for those that lived in it. That feeling changed once he was burned and turned into ashes by Parvati's husband, Shiva, a time long long ago.

"Why was I killed? I only wanted to bring the man closer to his wife who felt neglected. Why?"

Time passes on and the spirit of the deva, Kama, found a human's body to inhabit. Too bad that human was one Sakura Matou who held a darkness within her that spoke to the soul of the bitter deva. Now in this present day Kama only lives to serve his own desires: which happens to be twisting the love and enjoyment of others as much as possible. It is through this same darkness that Kama found herself devouring humans. Using her host's body, she devours the physical but using a unique application of her power she can also devour the spiritual.

Devouring just the body will only end a soul's current life. Devouring the soul will completely destroy any person's chance of reincarnating. A most cruel fate but it delights Kama down to her very core. The (un)fortunate victim becomes one with her body and soul, so why wouldn't she become excited? The lucky victim will get to experience her personal affection for the rest of eternity!

There is one caveat to having Sakura Matou as her vessel and that is deep down, there is a tiny part of her host that cries out to be accepted and loved. A miniscule portion of that young woman's soul crying out to be 'saved' from her own darkness. To be forgiven for all of her sins despite being such a horrible individual. This also affects Kama and that she desires this in some way too. If someone can manage to survive long enough, well...it just might melt all the frigid ice surrounding Kama's 'heart'.
