Breaching the Membrane; Or, Well, Things Sure Are Getting Complicated, Aren't They?; Or, Two's Company, a Zillion's a Crowd
The entity known as Goobrove is the result of several multitudes of microscopic humanoids gathering together and forming a (mostly) working gestalt entity. How did these countless, improbably small personages manage to come together?
Well, that depends on which of them you ask.
Each member of the Goobrove mass comes from a distinct dimensional plane. Some will tell you they were drawn to the rest by fate, others by a freak lab accident, still others will say they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. No one is certain how Goobrove began, and to find out they'd have to sift through quite a few tiny, tiny individuals, since the original instigator of the strange entity has long since been lost to the collective.
Of course, with so many many many voices attempting to work in consort, issues are bound to surface. Goobrove's personality is as amorphous as its body, switching from one temperament to another without warning. The ooze could be friendly and playful one moment, aloof and distant the next, temporally shift and turn out to have been a malicious wad of hatred from the moment it was first encountered, then become a totally amicable gentleslime, and then finally devolve into a creature driven purely by instinct. It's a roll of the dice what mood will direct the multiform next. Try your luck!
Not that Goobrove as a whole is overly concerned with its origins, or aware of its tenuous grip on reality. The entity slips and slides in and out of locations within the Hither and Thither, following whatever whimsies drive it that day.
And no, it's not grape flavored.
Fluid Displacement; Or, A Whole Sort of General Mish-Mash; Or, Powers and Abilities; Or, Multiversal Solvent
When Goobrove engulfs something or someone, the person or object is converted into magical energy for the spellcasting members of the collective to use to summon additional persons to incorporate into its mass. Excess material is stored in a gooey pocket dimension for later use. Thousands of itty, bitty portals are created on the spot when the creature “digests” something, causing its victim to be cast in an ethereal violet glow as they’re broken apart.
Because Goobrove's form is comprised of so many individuals of varying magical talents, the being is able to produce some limited magical effects. While it will usually reserve its supply of energy for use in digestion or calling on additional stored mass, Goobrove is capable of modifying its physical properties using magic. It can adjust its buoyancy and float in the air or alter its viscosity so that it
doesn't immediately engulf an unlucky passerby.
Goobrove in its default form is an undistinguished pile of purple protein, but with effort the ooze can pull itself together and maintain a single solid shape. However, to do this means the gestalt has to somehow force all the tiny figures comprising its body to cooperate for more than a few seconds, so it requires significant effort to maintain any one form. Additionally, Goobrove does not normally attempt to alter its pigment or texture when adopting a different mold, as that just means more effort is required to maintain its form. Yes, that translucent, near-featureless person is a little more relatable, but it's also clearly still an unstable multiform. Proceed with caution.
Though at any given time Goobrove values its malleability, at other given times the entity longs for a form that is a little more solid. Shapeshifting can only go so far, so Goobrove has found a means to give itself a little more structure by gaining access to the brain/distributed neural network/equivalent thinkmeat of an organism and taking control of their body. Whether this change is for keeps, a cooperative arrangement, or the ooze is ousted by the stronger will of its host depends on several variables. The gestalt
is constantly in flux and will have trouble trouncing more powerful souls, but then again the individual tiny consciousnesses comprising the gestalt could prove overwhelming to even the most stoic of psyches...
The Hither and Thither Expanded; Or, Drawing Back the Curtain!
Goobrove is several zillion extraplanar analogues of magical blacksmith Danielle Obrove. It is not her past self, her blood relative, or a close acquaintance. It's the Obrove for the several zillion distinct universes, whereas
Danielle is the proprietor of the famed Wisteria Smithery.
Other Obroves, whole or in part, can be discovered at their alt list,
here.
There are more "Danalogues" to come, eventually, so we kindly ask that you...
STAY TUNED!
