Maddie Hesper was never normal. The word cannot apply to cannibalistic sociopaths compensating for their failure to control their lives by ending others’. But for a long time she was normal-sized – six feet tall, a little on the heavy side, but not particularly out of the ordinary. That changed when Maddie accidentally took some of her own shrinking pills. These illicit drugs had long been her method of choice for victimizing anyone she couldn’t convince to come back to her apartment willingly. Never a tidy person, Maddie mistook them for Ecstasy tablets during a night of drunken debauchery and downed an entire vial before passing out. Ordinarily this would have been a death sentence – a week or more trapped at a tenth her original size. But instead, something in the cocktail of booze, drugs, and half-digested woman sloshing around in her gut reacted with the pills in an unexpected way.

When Maddie woke up, she was over sixty feet tall and lying in the ruins of her apartment building. Instead of considering the ethical implications of her sudden new strength, or pausing to wonder why the drug had affected her clothing and piercings when the shrinking effect ignored both, she snatched up the preppy newscaster across the street and began rampaging across the city. The military response arrived within the hour, but it quickly became clear that anything heavy enough to stop her would turn half the city into a smoldering wreck (or so the Air Force spokeswoman claimed – conspiracy theorists allege that a desire to capture her alive and reverse-engineer whatever reaction took place, not concern for collateral damage, are behind the inaction).

Citizens are encouraged to remain indoors and below ground if possible. Help is coming. Eventually.
