"It's my duty to to balance the scales of life and death. In other words, I decide whether you live or die" - Hala Ersys
Misguided by grief for the loss of her beloved friend, Hala Ersys learned the dark arts of Necromancy at a young age. Instead of falling down the path to lichdom, she found resolve through faith, becoming a cleric of the grave. Through her teachings and her journeys she's learned the grim realities of life, death, and mortality. Having been used by evil for her powers, Hala struggles with her latent abilities. She ponders if someone's nature determines their actions, and actively lives her life helping others to prove that notion wrong. After laying to rest a lover whom she spent a lifetime with, Hala seeks to resolve any loose ends in her past before turning the page on a new chapter. She currently travels the world searching for her long lost twin sister. In the pursuit of righting past wrongs, she cares for even the smallest villages along her aimless journey…
Hala found love at a young age, with a fellow young elf named Theoden, a noble’s son. What started as playing and games evolved into living and a bond that seemed as if it could withstand the test of time. He filled the void that her family had left wide open. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be. As they grew Theoden fell terminally ill with a rare genetic illness, and a few grueling decades later he passed on. Devastated by the loss, and with a mother lacking all sympathy Hala ran away deep into the forest to try and find solace with herself. What she did find was some ruins. There she uncovered an old tome. It was an ancient twisted version of the language she called her own, but she could decipher one thing in the first couple pages, “raise the dead.” What Hala saw in front of her was an opportunity to be reunited with Theoden once again. Misguided and without any word of caution, she studied the tome and others like it she found in her dad’s library, determined to extract its teachings in an almost obsessive manner. It was during this time her relationship with her little sister began to wane. Years pass, and the naive elf believes she is ready to perform a ritual she has devised using her teachings, a ritual of resurrection. On a stormy evening, she ventured down into the catacombs. After performing the ritual, she was not met with the warm reunion with her lost lover, instead met with a laceration across her face from a rotted corpse. She had certainly raised the dead, but not in the way she had envisioned it… For dabbling in the dark arts and desecrating their son’s grave, Theoden’s dad sought to have Hala banished from the village and rot in a jail with other witches. However, the clerics that came to settle the matter had different plans. Seeing a young misguided girl with potential, they offered to take her into their church and help set Hala straight. Without any other choice, Hala accepted. In a blur, she packed what little she could, and said her goodbyes to her sister, though they were short and bittersweet. Her mother didn’t say a word. In her new home, she found herself in the temple of the elven moon goddess, Sehanine. Sehanine sought over many domains, one of them being the domain of the grave, the divide between life and death. Hala’s mentor, Arasne, guided Hala on her path to become a cleric of the Grave. It was during this time at the temple that Hala took to heart many of Sehanine’s teachings. Through her faith, Hala learned to not give in to the horrid powers necromancy had to offer, resisting the temptation into lichdom. She came to understand that death was necessary to give life its meaning and to keep balance in the world. She also learned that undead creatures were a violation to this, a disgrace, a set of constructs that needed to be destroyed if ever encountered. In later teachings, Arasne taught Hala how to use her magic for good. Hala learned that necromancy could be used both ways, capable of causing death and preventing it. One thing that Hala struggled with was her own arrogance. Having a natural affinity for her magecraft, she often didn’t her teachings as close to heart as she should have, especially in regards to restraint. Hala and Arasne’s relationship grew strained, Hala demanding to do more, while Arasne knew she had much still to learn… Frustrated with the stubborn adolescent, Arasne sent Hala out prematurely on her first adventure, knowing the experience there would be more valuable than any of her words. This quest was simple, to investigate anomalies happening in a not so distant land. At least, simple is what Arasne had in mind... (to be continued)
