Hanamoka

"...history plunged into a dark age after her fall. Archaeological evidence suggests that strife among the surviving humans followed, likely due to power vacuums in the lost governing bodies as well as scarcity of resources in the wake of Nogechi's wrath, which had already destroyed most records of before the war. Only one simple short story unearthed from a school of the era offers a vague account of what may refer to one facet of the struggle.

There was a woman who loved her husband with all her heart. The man was imporant, for ruling and guiding land was his art. Through his guidance many people thrived, until one day the empress arrived. To unite all the land, she offered him to join with her rule over them quite meek. Yet the husband had fallen gravely ill, and toward the offer he was unable to speak. The woman who loved him did all she could, yet even through treatment his disease withstood. The empire grew impatient, visiting every day; yet all the woman had left was to pray. Despite all she tried, her husband soon died; though it wasn't illness that put him to rest, but a dagger that was found in his chest. The woman fell into despair, her husband gone with no heir; and she was deemed unfit to lead, thus the empire took the deed. Believing the dagger to be theirs, she considered the empire heartless, so for the sake of revenge she sold herself to the darkness. So when the Empress laid out her rule on the land, the woman appeared to make her stand. With power from the demon most fell, she cursed the Empress with a spell. "As you have murdered my beloved and robbed this land of its heir, so too will your rule end without your man or one child to bear!" As evil magic gripped the Empress, the guard charged to have her speared. Yet without a single trace the woman simply disappeared.

Despite the piece being one of the few preserved from that era, the official genealogy recovered from the old empire's records state that no empress ever held power, so most academics believe the piece to be a simple children's fairy tale, the obnoxious rhyming only supports this theory. Though it's interesting to note that this the story may be the earliest known reference to the Inukai cult that still terrorizes Nogechi to the time of this writing..."
- The Known History of Nogechi. Vol 1.

Hanamoka bode her time in waiting, spending hundreds of years.
This was a simple matter, for her master's magic preserved her age, and the trickling converts provided her company.

When her name was forgotten to history, Hanamoka emerged to woo a lord of a small land.
This was no problem, for she had once done it before, even without the assistance of her lord's magic.

After she had taken the Nahoko family name, Hanamoka's husband disappeared in an attack by the Inukai cult.
This did not concern her, for in secret, they were her only true friends, allies, and family. And her new husband was merely a tool.

When the lord's loss was made official, Hanamoka claimed the land for herself.
This went without protest, as unlike the last time there was no despair, the people respected her aged wisdom, and the times have changed the rules.

When Hanamoka took charge, the land prospered with great material wealth.
This was another simple manner, for her master's power over the earth allowed for riches to be dug out with ease.

When Hanamoka's people prospered, many of Nogechi's populace was drawn to the once-quaint territory.
This was all according to plan. For the greater and more dense a population was, the less likely a few disappearances were noticed. Her master did love sacrifices.

Beware, those that reside in the growing northern county of Nogechi's central kingdom. For behind the warm smile and kind words of its lady lies a bitter soul who belongs to a master which desires little but mankind to suffer for its deeds.

You have been warned.
