When the uplift program first started, labs opened in every state, spreading like wildfire as the genegineers tried to get as many species Uplifted as possible before the public changed their minds. Unfortunately, this lead to a few accidents as labs occasionally sacrificed safety for expedience.

One of the worst, and most heavily publicized, was the intelligence enhancer spill in Montana. Hundreds of unsuitable hosts were exposed, with consequences ranging from animals too small to take the new intelligence going insane and suiciding to the creation of the Hymenopter Collective, a vast ant intelligence that has cells spanning hundreds of miles.

But one of the least horrible, and therefore mostly unnoticed, effects of the spill was a young stud bull named Kai. Grazing a field only a hundred yards from the spill, the young bull got a massive dose that took him from being a highly territorial lawn mower to a confused creature with the intellect of a college professor and no idea what to do with it.

After finally managing to get some of the clean-up crew to understand what had happened to him, he was removed to a clean-up facility. A quick and dirty implant gave him the ability to speak, and he was offered a few options.

Firmly rejecting the idea of reversal, he successfully sued for damages, and used the funds to buy a full restructuring and a suite of cybernetics to allow him to integrate into the human world.

Doing odd jobs as a mercenary, bouncer, enforcer...whatever pays the bill, Kai developed a firm dislike for the way bovine-kind was treated by humans. When the Population Control Act passed, allowing the sentients to be eaten, Kai was first in line for a predator upgrade, and he hasn't looked back since.
