Mermaids are often considered fairly reclusive ocean dwellers, and mermen even more so. Living deep beneath the waves, far away from the prying eyes of humans, tending to… I don’t know. Sea weed gardens. Or singing songs about how awesome it is to live constantly surrounded by water.
And then there's Kai. Ever since he came across a sunken freighter with most of it' innards and equipment intact, Kai has been utterly fascinated by the technology of the human world. Think simillar Ariel, from the little mermaid, only, you know, actually knowing what the fuck a fork is.
Electronic technology in particular is what’s fascinated the 20-something merlad, made all the more frustrating that he can’t really get it to work underwater without taking significant pains. Still-
He’s managed to find an underwater cave with some near-surface air-pockets, slipping a short ways under the mainland. With a number of plastic trash bags to try and bring down parts safely thousands of bags of rice and industrial desiccant for salvaged and damaged pieces, and several failed components, the poor tech-starved Mermaid has actually managed to cobble together a working ‘computer’ that he can use! It’s not *powerful*, but it’s functional. And with a mainlander friend with an industrial drill and a lot of cable, he’s… well, he’s managed to steal power and a small bit of internet. Enough to while away hours in the dark cave, illuminated only by the glow of the monitor.
Not that that he just sits around chatting on the internet. There’s still so much out there to try and scavenge, and it’s so much more fun to try and talk to people face to face!
And he hears they’re doing a lot more with waterproof technology these days…
Kai’s considered bit scrawny *even* for a mermaid. Not that he necessarily minds: Being ‘short’ and lithe makes it a lot easier to wriggle into wrecks to find things to scavenge and salvage-whether to try and fix them himself, or to sell them to landwalkers. His soft blue scales are supple to the touch, feeling very much like snake-skin, albeit generally *wet* snake skin. And lastly, those little fins on his head are there to help him detect small changes in local currents. Which means they’re very, *very* sensitive, and playing with them is a good way to get a bit of a wriggly, fish-flopping merlad on your hands…
Generally, Kai has a small, leather bandolier with several double-sealed, watertight pouches-how else is he going to move his phone around?! Too bad the signal on the seafloor is utter crap...
