Background:

A gnoll's life is never easy, and for Kyrn it was no different. Shortly after being born, he had to fight his own siblings for survival. The strong survived, while the weaklings were devoured by their brothers and sisters. The surviving pups banded together against other kids of the pack as they grew up, once more separating the strong from the weak. The adults let the offspring sort it out by themselves without much oversight. It was both their nature and their culture.

But when he and his remaining sister reached adulthood, things changed for Kyrn. Now a full member of the pack, he once more closed ranks with former enemies against a common threat - the world around them. Nobody likes gnolls, and to be honest they do not try very hard to make themselves appeal to others. Rowdy and boisterous when confident, but surprisingly cunning and sly when needed, gnolls do not have too many amicable abilties. Survival of the fittest is a game where mercy is a weakness. A weakness that only the strongest can get away with.

Kyrn was quick to pick up on this in his younger years, and soon staked out a strong position for himself in the pack, ensuring good loot and regular meals when the gnolls ambushed another caravan or raided a homestead. But while the other members of his tribe were content with their simple life of violence and debauchery, Kyrn always felt an unrest stir inside him. Was it his demonic heritage? Was he too smart compared to his simpleminded breathren? Whatever it was, it eventually drove him away from the pack. Unwilling to dawdle any longer and unable to enjoy the savage lifestyle of the tribe, Kyrn packed up his belongings and started his journey into the world, to seek his destiny there. Riches and fame were just waiting for him, he was sure.

Riches, fame... and a lot of good meat.


Physical description and character:

As a gnoll, Kyrn can be an imposing figure. Standing straight at about seven feet he surpasses most humans in height, and often makes use of this to intimidate people around him. The lean build and surprisingly soft, spotted fur hide strong and wiry muscles, and the gnoll's demonic ancestry does its own to make many adventurers regret their choice of challenging him.

But if possible, Kyrn avoids a straight-up fight against formidable opponents. Separated from his pack the lone gnoll has become wary, and prefers lies and cunning to ensure the odds are in his favour, before opening a fight. A heavily armoured knight is lured onto soft, uneven ground, a hapless maiden frightened away from her guards. Once Kyrn believes himself to be on the winning side, however, the gnoll goes into the offensive. Powerful muscles flex under the short fur with every move, and the high-pitched cackle can be heard loud and clear as Kyrn comes down onto his prey.

When he is not out for loot or another meal, Kyrn can be surprisingly social and friendly. A lost wanderer in the woods who stumbles onto a well-fed gnoll can count on helpful tips and directions, and Kyrn is a well mannered and regular customer of taverns and market stands. The female cityfolk can find an exotic and very enduring lover in the gnoll, with strong arms, a broad, eager tongue and a well developed package below the belt - as long as they can stay out of his belly. Sex and vore are closely related for Kyrn, and what starts as a romp might end with a trip down his gullet.




In a modern setting, Kyrn's background is somewhat different, though similarities remain.
The gnoll had a rough childhood, growing up poor and in bad conditions. He fled the house of his parents -not that they cared much- at young age to join the street gang of his older sister. Well prepared for this kind of life by his heritage, armed with a strong, lean body, sharp senses and an even sharper wit, the gnoll quickly went up in the ranks. Petty theft, smuggling, extortion, armed assault - the list of his crimes is long. The truly heavy stuff like drugs, heists, abductions and assassinations was left for the bigger fish of the underworld though.

Still, one day something went wrong. A simple meeting with a rivaling gang for negotiations turned sour. One word gave the other, knives were drawn and knuckledusters slipped on, turning the gang meet-up into a full blown turf war. The police was surprisingly quick to the scene, raising assumptions about a trap. Kyrn had a lot of time to think about this, during his two years in jail. He joined a rehabilitation program -not like he had much of a choice- and was quick to catch up on the game. It was the same as before: The people in power commanded, the others followed. But instead of sharp knives, charming smiles were now the weapon of choice. The gnoll adapted well to the new situation, learning when to snarl and when to put on a good face. When he was released at the end of his term, the state offered him a chance at a new life - as a dog catcher, an official job under the government's supervision.

Kyrn accepted. He brought the right attitude to deal with both wild animals and bureaucrats, and was not afraid to get his hands a bit dirty. He now lives a simple, but eventful life at the edge of the city. One day the gnoll roams the street with his dog catcher van looking for strays, another day he gets called to deal with an escaped, exotic pet or dangerous wildlife that made it into somebody's garden. But he cannot deny his demonic heritage as a gnoll. It is in Kyrn's blood. Every now and again it breaks though, and the charming smile on his lips turns into a dangerous, toothy grin. Thankfully, he figured out that the boxes and cages in his dog catcher van are not only useful for transporting aggressive animals, but work just as nicely for overzealous animal rights activists, uppity street punks or snobby house wives.


Roleplaying ideas:

- A small town hires a heroine (positive word for mercenary) to get rid of the annoying highwayman, who keeps raiding small caravans and robbing lonely travellers. But eventually the enemy turns out to be more dangerous than she had thought...
- Kyrn manages to kidnap the daughter/wife of a wealthy man (or even rescue her from other bandits), holding her for ransom. Maybe she ends up in his belly (or elsewhere), maybe she will get her freedom back or they even get friends.
- The gnoll meets other adventurers and travels around with them for a while. They could do evil or good, depending on their intentions.
