In the city that Laereth lived in, the Festival of the Paling was held every four years when the dual moons were aligned in eclipse over the sun, blocking out all light for several moments. Normally the people of her city would close their doors and keep everyone inside for the day, since that signaled the beginning of the dark pass, giving power to all things evil. However, because of a threat that had been made to kill fully half the population if they did not cooperate, all of the people in the city came out during the festival, the elves trying to make the best of things even though most of them knew what was coming. On exactly noon of the day of the Festival, a cloaked merchant would walk into the city and straight into the town square, setting up his cart to display a number of beautiful pieces of jewelry. Everything from pendants and rings to circlets and even a couple Signet stones. He did not sell these pieces though. He set up the display, and simply walked on down to a nearby tavern to get himself a drink. When he returned, there would undoubtedly be a few missing pieces, and he would choose those who had taken one from him to take back with him. None of those he took had as of yet returned, nor had any word ever been spoken of them elsewhere in the world.
It was during Laereth's thirty-first year that she first encountered this man, though she did not take anything from his cart, she simply stood staring at the beautiful pieces as they shimmered in the light, casing a varicolored display on the surrounding stones of the street. The man came back to pick up his cart and track the pieces that had been taken when he saw her, simply sitting on a nearby bench and staring with a strange smile on her face. Curious, he approached her, speaking for the first time anyone had heard in the last twenty years. "Little one, do you like the pretties that I have gathered?" he asked, his voice sounding rather rough. She looked up at him and nodded in response, keeping her eyes on his shadowed face. "Well, why did you not take one? They were unattended." he asked again, but to his surprise, she giggled at him. "Because I have no money to pay for them, and you weren't there to tell me the price." she responded happily, making him pause for several moments. Nodding his head slightly, he turned to start heading back to his cart. "Little one, I promise you that next festival, I will carry a special piece for you. It will cost you five gold." he told her, before closing up his cart and vanishing off with the people who had actually taken from him.
There were a few people who had seen her talking to the cloaked man, so her elders called her aside one day to speak with her about the incident. Needless to say, her prompt and happy responses of the encounter baffled them, since all of their dealings with him had usually ended with threats of death and tragedy. When they asked her why she thought that he was nice to her when they usually ended up arguing, she gave them a winning smile. "Because you treated him like everyone else. You feared him. Try being his friend." she responded, and thinking that was the last question they had, she simply skipped off to go out and play in the field. She hadn't forgotten the promise though, and knew that nothing he had would be worth less than sixty gold, so she worked hard during the four years that she had to gather all the money she could. Finally, the appointed day rolled around, and she stood by herself in the town square, waiting for him to arrive. All around her were other elves who had heard her reason for working so hard throughout the last several years, and were curious to see what exactly she was going to do when she saw him. What kind of relationship they had, if any. Finally, the horn sounded, and everyone tensed as the man made his way slowly up the road, pulling his cart behind him like he always had been.
She smiled when she saw him coming towards her, and moved quickly over to help him set things up, something that actually surprised him if the pause was any real indicator. As soon as things were set up, she gave him a wide smile. "I know you said that you would have something for me, and that it would only cost five gold, but I know at least a little about the value of what you have here. So, here." she said, offering him a small bag. Inside the bag was seventy-six gold coins, shocking him into speechlessness for a moment. He looked up at her again when he saw how much was there, to see her smiling at him brightly. After a moment, he reached into his pocket, and withdrew a simple pendant. The chain on which it rested was a bright silver, while the teardrop shaped gem was a rainbow of colors, all seeming to shift and shimmer as it moved. Laereth was elated at the sight of it, her eyes brightening noticeably before she suddenly turned around, pulling her hair out of the way. "Could you put it on for me? I'm no good with those kinds of clasps." she said, waiting a few moments until he finally did so, a nice little click signaling when it was fully in place. She turned back to him once it was, releasing her hair and pushing it behind herself as she gave him another smile. "Thank you so much for this. I know I didn't give you enough for the value of this, but if you want, I can give it back to you before you go."
The cloaked figure was again stunned, making this a definite record for the greatest number of shocks that he had received in less than an hour. After a moment of silence, he reached up to pull down his hood, revealing that he was in fact an ash elf, someone whose power had once threatened to topple their entire kingdom. Laereth blinked at this a few times in her own surprise, before suddenly giggling and smiling again. "So you modified your voice when you talked to me? Amazing! What kind of magic was that? I've never heard of a specialty that could do that before." she said quite happily, making him pause for a few seconds. Finally, in a rather smooth voice, he responded to her. "You are not afraid of me for what I am? For what I've done?" To his great surprise, she shook her head several times. "Why should I be? You only punished those who stole from you, and threatened the elders because they were mean to you." she said simply, further confusing him. After a several moment pause, he began closing up his cart again, the girl once again helping him pack things up. "I'm sorry. Tell your elders that this was my last visit. I won't come again." he told her as he finished closing up the last of it. Before he could pick it up to start leaving, she suddenly gave him a rather tight hug from behind, making him freeze completely. After a moment, he turned around and gave her a pat on her head, as well as his first real smile. "Thank you, and goodbye. I hope to see you again someday." he told her, before he finally began making his way out of the city. She watched with a smile until he was out of sight, before turning and making her way quickly towards the council chambers, ready to give his words to the people.
When she arrived there, she heard quite a bit of yelling through the closed door, though she couldn't make any of it out. With her usual lack of tact, she burst into the room, stunning every member into silence as she made her way to the center. "He wanted me to give you a message. He said he won't be coming here ever again." she declared, further stunning everyone there. After several moments of silence, the leader of the council slowly stood up, fixing his eyes on her. "We of the council have been deliberating on this issue for quite some time, and while not all of us agree on what to do, there is enough for a majority vote. Your association with the merchant, who has threatened this city, who has stolen from our families, is a danger to us. And while we are grateful of the news that he will never again darken our streets with his evil, we cannot overlook that he has a special interest in you. For the sake of our people, you will be exiled in two months time. You will be given suitable wilderness training before that time, as well as the equipment you need, but you will never again be allowed into this city." he said, waiting for a few moments while the shock slowly sank in for her. Seeing her expression, everyone there quietly began picking up their things and filing out, only a few pausing to look back at her as the tears began rolling down her cheeks.
Her family helped her out wherever they could during the two month period, and the wilderness training was so tough that she had to learn quickly if she wanted to have even a chance of getting through it alive. She knew the value of such work though, and didn't shirk on it at all, pushing her way past the obstacles of her ignorance to learn the proper way to make her way through a forest, or field. She learned how to scale both tree and cliff, how to hunt any wild game, and how to properly evade the more common predatory beasts that exist out in the world. Finally, as the two month mark was hit, she gathered all that she was being allowed, which included one dagger, one bow, and a quiver of twenty arrows. She had rations enough for a week, since that's how long it would take her to reach the nearest human town. She was then sent off from the town, everyone in the city watching as she walked slowly down the road and into the wilderness. Her trip through was relatively uneventful, her hunting and foraging efforts yielding enough that she was able to keep all but a days worth of her travel rations on her way to the city. Once she arrived in the human town, she began looking for whatever work she could take to sustain herself. Most humans laughed at her outright since she was still quite small at that age, but when one of the more drunk humans in a tavern came at her, and she easily threw him over the bar without any seeming effort, she quickly found work first as a 'bouncer' for the tavern in question.
This greatly helped the humans business as he was one of the very few people to hire an elf, let alone a female elf who supposedly could beat any man who came after her. She herself never said such of course, but the owner was making a great deal of money for spreading such rumors about her, while he also got a great guard for when people got quite a bit rowdier during the day. She stayed as the 'Untouchable Bouncer' for nearly a year, every fight giving her a better idea of how to fight those with a height advantage, with a weight advantage, and most importantly, with a human-like build. It was shortly after Laereth had turned thirty-six that she found herself a different sort of challenge. A group of adventuring humans, as well as the ever rare dwarf, had stepped into her tavern for the evening, and after seeing her easily bring down four people without taking so much as a scratch, the leader of their party approached her curiously. He was a middle aged human, about five feet, eleven inches tall, with streaks of gray showing that he was older than his appearance suggested. "I've never seen such a young elf fight with quite that level of skill before. Care to tell me your name? I'm Daveth if you want to know." he said simply, drawing the attention of everyone else in the tavern since she had simply beaten anyone who had tried what he appeared to be.
She simply nodded at him. "Laereth." she responded, not adding anything more to it, though that seemed to make the human nod a couple of times in and of itself. After a few moments of thought, he gave her a grin. "I have a business proposition for you if you'd be interested. Well, even if you're not interested I suppose. Don't worry though, it doesn't involve what's commonly said about the average human, and if you help us succeed, you'll make more gold in seven weeks than you'd make in a year here. Unless the tavernmaster is paying you a kingly wage." he said. Normally, she would have told him no right off and left it at that, but she remembered something that she had wanted to do since she had been exiled. Reaching up, she lightly touched on the pendant that was hidden beneath her clothing, before giving him a nod. He was grinning widely as he led her back over to the table he and his friends had chosen, off in a smoky corner of the room. She declined the offered seat, instead simply staring and waiting for him to make his proposal since she didn't trust him. Besides which, she was still on duty at the moment, and it was hard to move if your legs were tangled under a table and hindered by a chair. The other members of his party were giving her rather odd looks in their own right, all of them probably a bit put off by her seeming hostility.
"See, our problem is something like this Laereth. We're going after a rather good sized hoard of treasure, but the problem is, it's guarded by a group of goblins, Now normally we could just let Draug here..." and he pointed at the dwarf, "...go in there and wipe the floor with them while we handle the traps, but they've got a caster with them as well. Normally they're uncoordinated buggers, but with a one of their leaders there, that means that this is a seriously big haul if we can get to it, and they'll be that much more dangerous for it. Last report I had indicated that they'd fight all of us at a distance if they saw Draug, since everybody knows you don't fight with a dwarf if you can at all help it. Now, we do have Lilith here as our own mage, but even she'd have trouble with fifty poison coated arrows on top of a dark burst." he said, gesturing to the female human sitting across from himself. "Now, you may be wondering what this all has to do with you, but, well, the goblins fight based on the threat as you know, so if they see all of us, we'll have more holes in us than the cheese your master serves here. However, if they see you first and nobody else, they'll probably charge. You don't exactly look intimidating, but having seen what you can do, I think you'd be all right, particularly if we joined in once the close range fight started." he finished, giving her another grin.
She thought carefully about this for several moments, considering the various parts of this that would be dangerous, and what the rewards might be. Finally though, she gave them a nod. "Give me a day to set things in order, and an equal share of the treasure, and you've got yourself a partner." she told him, giving a slight smile that surprised everyone. They had thought that she would turn him down flat, like all the other people he had thought suitable for such a dangerous job. Her preparations were simply a matter of gathering up the equipment that she still had from when she left, which was still in good condition due to her care. She got herself a bit of armor, and an outfit more suited for traveling in than what she owned. She also picked up a waterskin and two weeks worth of rations. This made for a suitably large pack, but she was easily able to ignore the weight since her muscles had grown with each person she had to put down for being a nuisance. She met them early two days after their conversation, and set out with them on her first real adventure. During the several weeks of travel, she got to know each of her three companions a bit better, realizing to her surprise that she was actually rather fond of the lot of them, though they could be rather agitating at times.
They all arrived at the cave in which the treasure was supposed to be hidden, and Daveth told them all to set up a small, well hidden camp outside while he went in to get them a sketch of the place the battle was likely to take place. Draug then showed off why very few people ever bothered messing with the dwarves as he quickly hollowed out a fair sized cave in less than a minute thanks to his transmutation ability. Once they had enough space to lay down all of their bedrolls, plus Daveth's, and set out their packs, he returned to the entrance and remade most of the wall, leaving a symbol engraved on the outside that he was sure wouldn't be missed by their companion. It was nearly two hours later that he finally returned, a complex pattern of knocks proving that he was actually Daveth and not someone else. Once Draug had let him in, he quickly resealed the cave, leaving a few air holes around the outside edges so that they wouldn't suffocate, while the symbol was erased. "Okay, I've got it. It looks like they've set up in a wide chamber, so no matter how we go in there, we're going to be dealing with a prolonged battle. They've also got a couple of dedicated archers if I could guess by the equipment, so we'll need to take them out along with the caster. We have to get the first though, otherwise we all might end up dead. Draug can work with Laereth to take out the melee combatants, though you should be careful. They might have poisoned weapons. I'll leave the archers to Lilith, since she can take out the arrows if the archers manage to get a shot off. I'll sneak up and take out the caster from behind if I can manage it. If he kills me though, all of you need to fall back immediately, and if you still want to go for the treasure, draw their melee combatants back a little so that Lilith can burn them all." he told them, unrolling the sketch of the cave layout that he'd made to give them reference points.
They left all of their equipment inside the cave except that's what they needed to take for the upcoming battle. Draug mostly resealed it after they left, and replaced his particular mark on it before they quietly made their way into the main cavern, doing their best to keep any sound from escaping from them. It took forty minutes of slow, careful walking to get up to the opening, a few gestures indicating how they were going to do this one. Nodding a few times, she gave her companions the time that was requested of them, before suddenly stepping out into the open and moving up to the closest goblin, easily snapping his neck before he could let out more than a cry. Kicking the small creatures corpse out of the way, she grinned at the rest of them who were staring at her in shock. In moments, they began rushing towards her, picking up weapons of varying types along the way as they went on the offensive. Hearing a particular whistling noise, she quickly ducked down, narrowly avoiding the arrow that had been fired at her head, before moving up into close range while drawing her small dagger. She fought quite well, and every goblins attention was so focused on her that the plan went off without a hitch. The two archers suddenly burst into flames, giving extra pause to all the goblins except for the caster. He let out a loud scream of rage, and fired a ball of dark energy towards Laereth.
It was at that moment that Draug joined the fight, bursting up from under the ground and changing the composition of the rocks that flew outwards so that one of the shards that struck the ball suddenly absorbed most of the power, so the impact only made her stagger rather than injuring her and flinging her across the room. The sudden appearance of a dwarf shocked all of the remaining goblins allowing the three who had moved into to start slaughtering those who were left. Just as the caster was about to give orders to his underlings, he suddenly stiffened as a blade emerged from his chest, Daveth rising up behind him, seemingly from the shadows. With a careless flick of his blade, he threw the corpse down in front of himself, and proceeded to behead it to make sure that there wouldn't be any final bursts of dark magic in an attempt to kill them. With the sudden death of their leader though, the goblins scattered and ran, the four of them joining each other beside the roaring fire that had been built to help them at least lightly cook some of their food. "Well that went off without too much trouble. I suppose we'd better look out for ambushes though, since some of the little buggers got away from us." noted Laereth, looking about the room carefully. The rest of them grinned at her, and to her surprise, the dwarf clapped her on the shoulder. "You fight like a cornered dragon. I've not seen any with that much finesse in all my years back home." he complimented, the first time he'd ever said something positive about her at all, the shock of which made her blush a little.
They all laughed at her expression for a moment, before starting to make their way down one of the side passages, chatting triumphantly among themselves as they made their way down the passage, all of them quite a bit happier for the seeming success of their quest. They slowly made their way through the local cave system, doing their best to find what looked like well worn paths or like they were more evened out than other paths. It took nearly an hour of searching, but they finally found the proper room. The guards there were more loyal than most goblins, so there was a very brief fight that again ended in victory before they managed to get a good look at the treasure. There was gold there, and more than enough of it. Rings and amulets filled with all kinds of rare gems, the occasional sword or axe or shield that had probably been taken from those who had attempted to take this hoard for themselves, but had fallen to the cunning of the goblins. While the rest of them looked through the assorted treasures of the room, Laereth made her way slowly towards the back of the room, looking in wonder at all the loot, but for some reason, she had the feeling that there was something more here. She continued looking through the room for a few moments until she came across a small chest. It was made of solid oak wood, engraved with a name or a title, and gilded to make it look particularly beautiful. Curious, she crouched down in front of it and looked for a keyhole, only to find that it didn't have one.
While she was examining the chest, she didn't notice her companions moving up behind her, all of them gazing at her curiously as she lifted the box up to eye level, turning it this way and that in an attempt to make sure that her eyes weren't deceiving her. While she was examining it, Daveth suddenly reached over and lifted it from her hands, surprising her a little as he too began examining the chest curiously. She simply stood up and watched as he looked it over, seemingly a little put off by it's complexity. Without a word, he handed it down to Draug, who spent some time examining it closely, muttering things to himself about the quality of the craftsmanship of the box. After a few moments, he attempted to pry the box open without success, which surprised them all since he could manipulate the type of stone or metal to be whatever he wanted it to be, but he didn't do so for the chest. Looking baffled himself, he handed it up to Lilith, who gingerly set it on the ground and began muttering spells under her breath while waving her hand very slowly over it. After a few moments, she shook her head. "I don't know what it is you've found here, but someone wanted to ensure that it didn't get opened." she said quietly, handing it back to her while making her shrug. She'd just take it with her to a smith and see if he knew any more about how to open it than they did.
Using a few magical objects that Daveth had brought along, they carefully packed up all of the gold and items that they could carry, and made their way back out of the cave, Laereth keeping a good hold on the chest the entire time. It took them a good nine weeks to get back to civilization, due to a few unfortunate encounters with agitating wildlife. Since she was skilled at hunting such creatures though, it usually only took two arrows before they broke and fled howling off into the night again. Dropping off her things in the room she shared with Lilith, she made her way down to the local smith and asked him about the chest she'd been carrying about. To her dismay, he didn't know anything about it, though he did mention that there was a smith of considerable skill in the capital city who might be able to open it, even if he couldn't identify it or it's actual opening mechanism. He also noted that if it was suitably interesting, then she'd probably get it done for free, since he appreciated the thrill and challenge more than making money. Thanking him for his time, and giving him some gold for the information, she made her way back to the inn and carefully stored the chest away inside her pack, before making her way down to the bar to join her companions in their meal. Before the human members of her party got too drunk on the beer, she told them that her next stop was going to be the capital, so if they wanted to spend their gold on some of the more rare things in life, they may wish to go along with her and check things out. Since all of them could think of at least a few reasons, they all agreed that their next stop would be the only true castle in the area.
It was up to her and Draug to pour the humans into bed once the night was over, since neither of them could actually sit up, let along walk anywhere on their own. In the morning, the humans were complaining about their hangovers, something Draug muttered to her was a common event after a night of celebration. He also showed her his secret way of getting back at them for the few cracks they'd made about his height. He spoke in a booming voice constantly, as if he didn't know how to moderate it. The visible winces of her companions forced her to stifle a giggle since she'd gotten her fair share of teasing since she was so young, at least in elven terms. They were all in good spirits by midday, and they picked up their pace enough that the trip to the city took them only ten weeks, making all of them quite glad that the winter had passed on their journey already, since the sun continued to shine warmly, meaning none of them felt their burdens as much during the day. They had no real trouble on this leg of their journey, and all of them walked through the massive main gate with grins on their faces. They split up once they hit town square, agreeing to meet back there in two hours to decide where they would spend the night. Laereth probably wouldn't need so much time, but she felt that it was best to hurry anyway.
She found the smith's shop easily thanks to a few locals, and made her way in without any sort of ceremony, fishing the chest out of her pack while she did so. The man she saw before her made her pause in shock, as he must have been fully eight feet tall, with muscle more than enough to spare. She was certain that anyone who was dumb enough to piss him off didn't make it that far. Walking up to the counter quickly, she set the chest down in front of him, and gave him a nod. He shrugged at her and picked it up between two thick fingers, raising it up so that he could properly examine what it was that she had brought him. He blinked a few times when he saw the inscription on the box, and looked briefly confused. Shrugging though, he soon carried it over to his anvil while pulling out the largest hammer she'd ever seen. With a practiced swing, he struck what was assumed to be the front of the box, opening it with a loud click, and a backlash of force that made her duck as the hammer flew into the nearby wall, denting several of the sturdiest looking steel shields. He was still blinking in shock as Laereth picked herself up off the floor, though he soon placed the box back in front of her before going to tend to his merchandise. Wanting to see what she had spent so much time trying to look at, she opened the box quickly, staring in shock at the contents.
After only a moment, she removed the objects from the chest and placed them into her pack, tucking them deep enough that they wouldn't be stolen no matter what. She then gave the box to the smith by way of thanks, figuring he could make far better use of it than she ever could, before making her way out of the shop. She picked up a few things along the way, namely a respectable looking suit that would leave her plenty of mobility in case she should need it. She also got herself a much better suit of leather armor, as well as another dagger and some more arrows. When she met up with her companions in the town square, she told them all to come to her room once they chose a tavern. They were a bit confused, but did as requested, all of them meeting her quietly while she dug through her pack. "I finally found someone with the skill to open the chest. But, it wasn't what I expected." she told them all, finally reaching down into the deepest part of her pack to pull out two stones, round and fully smooth, about two inches in diameter. All of their eyes widened on seeing the pair of orbs. "Signet Stones!" "By the Old Ones, you've got two of them!" she smiled and waited for them to calm down a little before she went on. "There was also a letter stating that these were to be delivered to the greatest dwarven fighter nearly a hundred and ninety years ago." she told them, all of them suddenly looking grave.
"That would mean, that someone got caught and slaughtered along the way, probably a few decades before the goblins overran this city. If that's the case, then does that mean that they knew what they were going to do even then? Just how smart are those bastards?" said Daveth, amazed at such a revelation. Draug looked over the stones again for a moment, then up to Laereth. "What are you going to do with them? I daresay you could become royalty in your own right since you've go two of them, but in all technicality, they do not belong to you, nor to any of us." he said, bowing his head while trying to think everything out. After a few hours of deliberation, they decided to simply hand the stones and note over to the king himself since he was nearby. He may even be grateful that they were returned at the least. So all of them dressed quite carefully the next day, each in garments of his or her personal choice, though all were easily ready for combat as they made their way to the castle gate. They were stopped only briefly by the guards, but when shown the Signets, they quickly stepped out of the way with a salute, sending a messenger on ahead to let the king know that he was going to have some rather interesting guests. So it was that, when they were finally guided to the throne room, all the Lords and Ladies were completely silent, eyes fixed on them as they made their way closer to the throne. At twenty feet, all of them dropped to a knee and bowed their heads in respect.
"Rise, and please, tell me what brings you here today. I've heard of the Signets you carry, but I wish to know your purpose with them." he called, his voice quite strong despite his more lanky frame. Reaching slowly into her inside pocket, she withdrew both the stones and the letter that had accompanied them. "These two stones were lost by a messenger a little more than a hundred and eighty years ago. They were a gift from the king of this city to the greatest warrior of the dwarves, but they never made it to their destination. We four found these stones in a cavern some ten weeks travel to the Northeast, and decided among ourselves that they should be returned to this kingdom." she responded, turning and offering them to the chamberlain, who took them with trembling hands to show them to the king. He looked at the letter, then at the stones, nodding a few times in surprise that they would give up such a valuable artifact. They could've sold both stones for more than ten thousand gold a piece. After talking about it for a few moments, the king rose to his feet. "In thanks for returning such a gift to us without question or demand, we grant all of you the rank of Lord within this kingdom. Lands shall be appointed you, though you will have to build your homes with your own gold. You will have the full services of the castle in the meantime, and there will be a banquet in your honor in three days time." he called, making a ripple of whispers pass among the assembled nobles.
Laereth though, bowed her head. "I am sorry king, but I must decline this honor. I am too young and restless to be tied by a title, but I would appreciate permission to join the military of this city for a time, so that I can improve my prowess and prepare for the future." she called, waiting in the shocked silence of everyone in the room. After a few moments to collect his thoughts, he nodded. "I grant your request, young elf. Go with the blessing of the Gods." he returned, all of them bowing once more before making their way out the door. The four of them met in Daveth's room once they had learned the paths to their own rooms, and all of them sat talking about their plans for the future. To their surprise, Lilith and Daveth were going to get married so that their estate would be consolidated. They would build themselves a large house, and get someone to help them properly make money. Draug merely shook his head at the pair of them, and said that he would request his estate be near the Eastern mountain range, where he would build himself a grand city for any dwarf who did not wish to, or could not, return home. All of them looked at Laereth curiously though, wondering why she had turned down such an honor, essentially, in exchange for training. She smiled at them all happily. "Because I have a promise I want to keep." was all she said.
Since all of them had spent so much time traveling about and chatting with each other, nobody really got around to leaving the direct vicinity of the castle for the next forty years, Laereth leaving on the day that she heard that both Lilith and Daveth had died of old age. Her first taste of real grief was truly bitter, the woman almost unable to pull herself from her misery until Draug showed up to comfort her, wiping away her tears and reassuring her, even though his beard and hair were now streaked with white, signs that he was getting on in years himself. Once she had managed to calm down, she decided that it was time to move on again, thanking the new king for his aid since she had reached the rank of General due to the amount of skill she had shown. She told him that she was going to be out and about in the world in various places, but that she would return to help him and his kingdom if he truly needed it. That done, she packed up a brand new set of the very best equipment, and headed out into the world, once more alone. She spent the next twenty years crossing and crisscrossing the human lands, searching for any signs or sounds of the ash elf she had met all those years ago, but nobody had anything good to say or do with his kind, so she was often forced to leave empty handed. She wasn't hoping for much though, so continued her exploration of the world in a farther and farther range. When she finally heard of the death of her friend Draug, she sighed a little, and proceeded to do something that her friendship had prevented her from doing. She made her way to the cave system that she knew led deep underground, and began searching the Underworld for any signs. Sure, she did not know his name, nor what rank he held, but she still had the pendant she had been given. She hoped it was enough.
Her travels below took her a good year before she found what she was looking for in the form of a large city that was deep beneath the surface. Whatever light source they used was sufficient that she discarded her torch, walking quietly along the path that led down towards the gates. There was more than a little trouble when she reached them, as she was an outsider and an elf as well, and while their two peoples didn't really hate each other, it would be wrong to say that there weren't any sore spots for the Ash Elf society. It was only after she agreed to learn and follow their customs and rules that she was allowed entry, her wants being mostly ignored while they trained her in the way this strange city worked. Since there was so much to know and do properly, it took her another year to learn everything properly. Finally though, she was allowed to start her search, her skin having paled quite noticeably because of the lack of natural skyborn light. She spent two years searching for information and working at a rather disgusting establishment, though she never heard anything that got her any closer. As she finally reached her hundredth birthday, she decided that now was as good a time as any to make her way back up to the surface and resume her wandering since that at least gave her some satisfaction. Rather unfortunately for her, it was discovered that she had recently been the owner of the rank of General in the human's army, and she was quickly arrested under the charge of being an enemy spy. Since nobody truly trusted her, the result of the 'trial' was rather predictable, and she was thrown into the deeper levels of their keep as their prisoner.
She spent twelve long and dark years within that prison, and just as she was about ready to give up hope, someone opened the door to the wide open space that she shared with the ravenous beasts that shared such a hole, and were the only source of food for her. To her surprise, the ash elf that entered immediately went and hugged her, forcing her to blink several more times in shock. "It is good to see you again, little one. Never did I think that you would make your way all the way to my city to try and see me again." he told her, his voice making her eyes go wide as she suddenly hugged him back quite tightly. "I still have your pendant. And I'm sorry that I don't have the rest of the gold like I wanted to. It was sorta confiscated." she said, quite a bit happier now that she had met him again. He was easily able to get her out of the prisons and escort her all the way back up to the surface. Along the way, he told her of his travels, of where he'd gone, how he'd heard of her two more impressive achievements in the human kingdom, and finally how he'd been called back by family when someone put together just who she was looking for. She in turn, told him everything that she had gone through in her search, making him feel more than a bit bad for her since it was technically his fault that she had been exiled in the first place. She didn't mind though, since it had allowed her to achieve more in the span of a year than she would've been able to manage in her lifetime back at home.
The two of them finally reached the Overworld once again, and there he told her that the order was out to execute her on sight if she ever returned. He had his duties that he had to take care of, so it wasn't likely that they would meet again. A bit saddened by the news that she was going to be losing her final friend, she suddenly leaned over and kissed his forehead. "Thank you for all your help. I'll keep this pendant with me, always." she told him, before turning to make her way out into the world. Her eyes and skin were unused to the light of day, and her body was weakened from the lack of good nutrition that she'd had for the years she spent as a prisoner. So, she has spent the last five years of her life doing her best to recover, managing to get herself back in at least good condition, when she ended up out here.
OOC stuff below this point.
Okay, naturally enough, if I'm willing to throw down this much for a backstory, then it should be obvious that I'd prefer fully literate players. Not necessarily as windy as me, but at least literate. Similarly, if you wanna play out a storyline, there is the option to have this done in her world. I haven't finalized many parts of this new world, but it has a fair amount of history to it, at least on the human side of things. I'm fully willing to explain what sorts of things are present, and to get this one out of the way, yes, there is vore. It's more of a private entertainment choice, or potential for a monster hunt, but it's rare for most bipedal humanoids within the six foot tall range to consume their traveling companions, unless it should be requested. Usually it's a safety thing, or a way for people to be closer. In other words, don't expect to go down the street and see people eating each other. Now a centaur, or a naga, are very likely to do so, and similarly, insulting a nobles honor is likely to get you eaten. Maybe not digested, but you won't be looking your best when you get let out.
Okay, feel I should say this. I appreciate original characters. I don't mind if you're taking the inspiration from somewhere, but things like pokemon or their trainers aren't exactly smiled upon. Similarly, if your character is supposed to be a well known character, but with a vorish twist, it dampens my enjoyment significantly. Similarly, she is set in a medieval world at present. Bringing her into the new age is going to take more tact than most people seem to have, and if not done right, will likely get one or both arrested on charges of vandalism when she shoots a TV with her bow. Now this isn't to say I frown on characters who use the tools, but bringing her into a city would be a horrific idea.
As an OOC note, I would appreciate nobody trying to get into her pants first scene. She's an elf, not a harlot. If you want to sex an elf, look elsewhere, or spend at least several weeks getting to know her so she might give a response.
