Only a few weeks after her thirteenth birthday, Mal found something that changed her live forever. While on a school trip to Turkey, the girl stumbled upon an odd store, deep within the Bazaar. Curiously she poked inside, only to find a hunched old man smiling at her sincerely, and inviting her in. Many a wonder did she find in the shop, though none of them she truly understood, until she set her eyes on something that was not quite in place: Among the ancient relics, shining swords and polished animal bones stood a pair of ordinary-looking sneakers, seemingly special in no way. Quickly, she asked the shopkeeper about them, and was told that they are supposed to be magic, giving their wearer the ability to fly swift as the wind. The shoes were ancient, despite their appearance, but would change with the ages, adapting to the footwear most commonly worn at the time. Curiously, Mal asked if she may have them, only for the man to chuckle. His store was special after all, and so was the merchandise. He told her that the shoes would only allow themselves to be worn by the pure of soul, and would devour anyone else who tried to put them on. Taking the risk, the young redhead attempted to put them on their feet... and miraculously she was still there! Some might have disregarded the whole legend there and then, were it not for the girl finding herself on the other side of the store by taking the smallest step. Amazed himself, the shopkeeper let her take them, under two conditions: One, that she will remain pure and serve only the good, so she may not disappear inside the pair of shoes; and two, that when he needs help, she will come to aid him.
