There is a line of thought that 'no one is ever truly useless... they can always be used as a bad example'. With an alcoholic father and a domestically abusive mother, Martine McGannon used their bad example to defy a more common piece of conventional wisdom, 'the apple doesn't fall far from the tree'.
With both of her parents bouncing in and out of legal trouble, Martine eventually ended up in foster care, and bounced around between several homes before getting herself declared as an emancipated minor. Now on her own, Martine is determined to beat the odds and rise above her unfortunate childhood. To this end, she has enrolled herself in the prestigious Primrose_Academy, a school renowned for it's incredible academics and strong curriculum. She's done this because of the free tuition and the very strong tendency of the Academy's graduates to receive college scholarships.
Martine has, because of her past, become minorly obsessive about the law and rules in general, and in particular their enforcement. Due to the bad example set by her parents, she's come to value obedience to higher authority as a key to being successful, and considers criminals and rulebreakers to be worthless scum that need to be punished for their own good. If a girl is allowed to skip class now, she reasons, she will grow up thinking she can shirk responsibility and will be more likely to abandon a child. If a boy is allowed to shoplift candy bars with impunity now, he's far more likely to turn to robbery to support his family then honest work.
Martine has unresolved mommy and daddy issues.
So, to this end, Martine has volunteered to be one of her school's hall monitors and has taken to roving the halls in her spare time, helping the teachers to enforce the Academy's various rules. This mostly, mind you, consists of snitching on those that ditch class and reporting people that deface school grounds, but some think that Martine's seemingly anal-retentive behavior may be a first step towards a run for a spot on the soon to be formed Student Council. Save that her activities don't always make her popular.
But this is Primrose Academy and Martine's roving brand of enforcement is a very, very dangerous thing, because many of the school's predators don't care about the rules and Martine is a very delicious looking morsel. She carries a cattle prod around for defense and a walky-talky to get in touch with the main office, but some are whispering it's only a matter of time before she just disappears during one of her self-appointed patrols.
Alas, poor Martine didn't survive until graduation.
Despite many close encounters with predators throughout the year, both student and staff alike, Martine managed to survive, alongside her friend Quana, to the prom! The pair had developed a close bond... but Martine's awkward attempts to become more then friends led to a series of misunderstandings that left a dispirited Martine walking away from the hotel's balcony.
Quana was then attacked by the cruel goddess,
Jezebel_Greyson, and her shouts drew Martine back to her friend's side. The struggle was as vicious as it was brief, with both the girls falling over the balcony railing. But Jezebel simply jumped down after them, and, after ripping their dresses to shreds, devoured both girls one after the other. First Quana, then Martine, attempting to inflict all manner of verbal and mental cruelties on the hall monitor before she killed her.
Quana died with Martine's arms around her and her quiet reassurances that everything would be OK, even though Martine herself knew the truth. The darkness closed in around Marty moments later.
Despite the tragedy, there is an immortality, of a sort, for the pair, as Quana's friendship with Marty gave her the courage she needed to get her novel published. And in the dedication is Martine's name. It became a best seller.
