Partricia Arkan was an overly ambitious witch. Passing her soul around like a bong, she contracted untold powers that sought to devour her mortal soul... but in a bizarre twist of fate, the one to finally claim her was her beloved tomcat Mittens, after a shrinking spell gone wrong.
The aforementioned cat gained the ability to turn into a human - really just a catboy version of her - and rechristened himself as Matens Arkan. Patricia's patrons objected to this, of course, but their meticulously-worded contracts were turned against them as Matens declared
himself the dominant partner in each contract. On that day, fae princes were dethroned, devils cast into the abyss, forgotten gods - okay, let's be real, he just ate them all.
He really is still just a cat - lazing around, eating, and being vaguely aloof. Much as an ordinary housecat uses toxoplasmosis to tranquilize prey, he's long learned to exploit the dark forces at work within the depths of his body - whether convincing cultists to join their patrons or promising adventurers the quest of a lifetime if they only let him devour them. While his innards, long home to all manners of supernatural forces, are labyrinthine enough that you can avoid the worst of them for a while, he has plenty of ways to digest any intrepid explorers... not to mention that he isn't the only thing that hungers.
