Meld

“I’m my own person. That’s just the truth, it doesn’t matter what they say, it-- it doesn’t matter, their opinions don’t matter because they’re not me!

tl;dr: the last legacy of a failed attempt to seize power. a creature intended to absorb and gather mana, created by a megalomaniac whose soul-- along with the souls of the five would-be heroes who tried to stop him-- was accidentally assimilated into his own experiment.

the resulting being, called ‘Meld’, possesses his own unique consciousness that is distinct from the six people involved in his creation. their spirits are now irreversibly fused together inside him, but they have no control over their shared body, remaining captive as little more than voices inside Meld's head under all but the rarest circumstances. many of them want nothing more to die, but in stark opposition to that, Meld wants very much to live the new life he was mistakenly given... a conflict of interest that results in a very contradictory abomination, perpetually at odds with himself.

---

There are many things in this world that should never be trifled with. Magic, spirits, and the precious lives of human beings... only a brazen fool would dare meddle in such delicate affairs. To tamper with the natural order implies a willingness to sacrifice everything. And yet, when faced with the consequences of their sins, very few have the strength to accept their punishment. They don't realize exactly what it entails until it is already upon them.

One such fool sought power, power far beyond what any mortal should ever have hoped to obtain. In his mad bid to bend humankind to his whims, he created something that had no right to exist: an unholy hybrid of mana and flesh, a thing with no true shape. Its presence alone siphoned magic from its surroundings, indiscriminately gathering power through no conscious will of its own. In time, the well of magic within it was set to grow beyond its creator’s wildest dreams, tempering it into a peerless weapon-- the exact tool he needed to enforce his dominion.

His goal didn’t go unopposed, of course. Once the man’s intentions came to light, a group of five noble warriors stepped forward to put an end to his plans. These five had robbed the tyrant of his victory more than once before, firmly cementing them as his mortal enemies. He was prepared for them this time, he believed. When they burst into his laboratory to shatter his ambitions, he would introduce them to his latest and most perfect creation. Even in an incomplete state, it would surely destroy them. Not an ounce of mana had thus far escaped its grasp, and mana inherently lingered deep within the bodies and souls of every mortal creature. In its absence, they would be stripped of their vitality and fall lifeless at his feet. Who else would dare oppose him, then? Surely no one.

The circumstances played out exactly as he predicted. They came. They wreaked havoc. They condemned him for his selfish, conceited dream. They cried out in horror when he released the amorphous, malformed beast from its shackles and it dragged them in-- albeit far more literally than he had anticipated, the one thing contrary to his expectations. For all their valor, the heroes were helpless to resist a vortex that pulled away something intangible, the energies inside them, things they knew not how to protect. They shrieked and sobbed and clung to each other, clawing at the floor, trying in vain to stop that nameless thing from swallowing up every last scrap of their strength. And when that strength gave out, their bodies followed suit... peeling away into the mana void piece by piece, falling apart as if their flesh were made of putty. Not a trace of them remained. How morbid, he thought. How awful. How wonderful.

He approached the creature to bind it once more. Only in bitter hindsight did he notice that its body had begun to shift, sinuously twisting into something distinct and familiar. It almost looked like it was trying to appear human-- but the implications of such a thing failed to dawn on him in time, and that vague new form became the last thing he ever saw through his own two eyes.

Darkness gave way to light, and the laboratory solidified itself amongst the haze filling his vision. His body began to move, staggering to its feet, one hand clutched to his forehead, except-- except he hadn’t commanded it to do that, he hadn’t done anything, hadn’t even budged from where he lay. Like he was staring out a window, the world outside of his mind had been rendered unreachable... close enough to touch, yet somehow more distant than even the stars in the sky. In the wake of that moment, all he could do was watch. He eventually came to realize that watching was the only thing he’d ever be able to do again, because this body didn’t belong to him.

He wasn’t alone inside it, either.

It quickly became clear to the man that he’d created something awful, something he could never hope to comprehend. That thing, that supposedly mindless, mana-hungry beast whose only purpose was to accumulate power and destroy, had become irreparably warped by the introduction of human souls. Unable to properly process them, it condensed them together inside itself, pulling away at their edges until only the most essential aspects remained: the mind, the core of the being. The result of this failed integration was a mass of densely fused spirits, each retaining enough individuality to linger inside the creature’s thoughts. Thoughts altogether weren’t something that a mindless monstrosity should ever have been able to experience... but the amalgam of souls that had been forged within it functioned as a 'soul' in its own right, and the sum of those parts awoke that day as a sentient being.

The body it instinctively formed belonged to it and it alone; though human enough in shape, it otherwise resembled nothing of its composite parts. It called itself Meld, and set about trying to live the life with which it had been blessed. Yet an ordinary life, a happy life, the life of a human being-- such simple, lovely things ultimately proved unattainable for a creature whose mind was a prison, a hellscape of resentment and despair for those trapped inside.

Initially, Meld housed no ill will toward his six other ‘occupants’. He understood that they couldn’t even exist if it weren’t for the precise conglomerate of spirits that had blended together to define him. He was grateful, even-- but that gratitude was met with immediate hostility. The other voices wanted out. They wanted their bodies back. They wanted to be free from this torturous captivity, because existing as nothing more than a whisper in someone else’s mind was a most unenviable fate indeed. If they could not return to their previous forms, one of them decided, then they would rather cease to be. Death was certainly preferable to living forever in this state. That mentality cemented itself in due time, and soon only the most cowardly among them clung to the dregs of their miserable half-existences; dying would bring them their only possible release, yet without any means of controlling Meld’s body, they could never hope to die.

In the face of their own helplessness, the prisoners began to lash out. Their shared mind degenerated into a tsunami of frustration and malice, thoughts perpetually clogged by desperate pleas, then insults, commands, words meant to wound. Whenever Meld’s willpower waned, the absolute control the creature normally held over his body would start to waver. Then, and only then, could one of the other spirits make a bid to temporarily seize it. With his unique anatomy, Meld had plenty of tools at his disposal with which to cause harm... and one by one, those tools were turned against his own flesh and blood.

It was a natural consequence, then, that the beast grew vengeful at the mercy of such abuse. These souls, these once-humans-- they may have served as the basis for Meld’s existence, but that didn’t mean he had to defer to them, or respect them, or even acknowledge them. They were a hindrance. The day their lives as individuals ended marked the day Meld’s life began, and the amalgam resolved that it was unfair, no, cruel of them to try and abruptly cut that life short after they’d created this situation through their own folly. The heroes, of course, disagreed with that notion; they yearned to blame their nemesis above anyone else, and that blame could hardly have been called baseless. Regardless of fault, however, they were faced with an unfortunate truth. Meld was the one in control, and manipulating him presented the group’s only hope of salvation.

With the passage of time, the spite and misery festering within the poor creature’s mind have continued to blossom. The more desperate his prisoners become, the more stubborn and aggressive Meld grows, determined to live on and experience the realm he was erroneously born into. That powerful will to survive has so far protected him from any lasting harm, but keeping control of his rightful body is merely one of his troubles. Who is he, and what does he want from his sorry little patchwork existence? There are many questions like that, questions he's still struggling with, and it’s remarkably hard to find the answers when there’s no such thing as quiet inside his head.

He just has to stay vigilant. Be strong. Remember that he deserves to live as much as anybody else. And always, always ignore the voices at the back of his mind hissing give up, it isn’t worth it, this world is a despicable place and look at yourself, you’re an abomination, no one will ever love a thing like you so you should hurt yourself-- kill yourself-- it doesn't matter how, just die already--

--and if you won’t do it for your own good then you should do it for us.

Never/Dislike Don't worry, he's learned how to eat people the normal way by now! Y'know, in the sense that he can absorb someone's body and mana without integrating the poor bastard's spirit into his consciousness forever. If that happened, it would be downright awful for everyone involved--

Never/Dislike --though accidents do happen. Having one's soul consumed by Meld would mean spending eternity sealed inside his mind, and adding anyone else to that psychological hellscape is the absolute last thing the poor creature wants. He would never do it willingly. It's already bad enough in there. (Player actually loves soul vore, but on this character it will only be done on request-- and even then, only as an AU. No perma.)

Never/Dislike While he may typically use male pronouns, Meld is a biologically genderless creature, so sex in the traditional sense isn't possible. I don't tend to have much interest in it anyway, but if I like you and our characters have good chemistry, who knows? Maybe we can get creative.

Never/Dislike Hard no. Meld doesn't produce any waste, and I'm extremely uncomfortable with this sort of thing being incorporated or even implied.
Magic Always/Love

Never/Dislike Meld was made to consume mana. Even after gaining sentience, that remains his basest instinct, and he'll try to devour anything remotely magical-- including other living creatures (and especially mages). As you'd probably expect from such a creature, he's also completely immune to magic in all its myriad forms. If anything, Meld enjoys having spells cast on him, since it essentially amounts to a free meal.

Never/Dislike Meld is a somewhat malleable creature, so he's very capable of this. He's actually just as inclined to assimilate things directly as he is to eat using his actual mouth, making it a pretty common occurrence.
