Mezzo:
Mezzo, in the portrait above, is an acolyte with the main Sirens' temple. She was sent from the main temple to inspect this area and determine whether action is required in regards to the nearby town; she also was sent to see if there was a suitable site which to colonize and build another temple. Mezzo volunteered for this assignment after the betrayal of a lover. Mezzo's lover, a male Siren betrayed his people by revealing the location of their village to the humans. The result was predictable, but also tragic. Mezzo took this assignment as a way to track down her former lover as well as any of the humans who might have been involved in the destruction of her village.

Since then, Mezzo has become suspicious and untrusting. She has a particular mistrust of males in general, especially humans.

As far as Sirens go, Mezzo is usually cheerful and can often be heard humming or singing to herself as she goes about her day. Normally carefree except when hunting or performing some duty or such. As with all Sirens, Mezzo has a fascination for the music and songs of other cultures, and a natural admiration for any creature capable of "sharing in the divine gifts." While non-sirens are generally viewed interm of how useful they are to her or her causes, those who display musical talent are afforded great respect in her eyes. As part of a druidic culture, Mezzo is a devotee to nature, outside her lair is a lush garden. As a rule, Mezzo shuns technology, even her headphones are made of all natural materials. Those headphones are actually noise cancellers to protect her very sensitve hearing, made from a naturally derived foam. The actually secrets of this foam are only known by skilled Siren crafters.

Among Sirens, their clergy are ranked according to length of service and number of sacred songs learned. They also believe that their pantheon literally sang things into existance, they also believe that the natural order must be preserved inspite of the corruptions of technology. Mezzo, like other sirens in the religious caste spend a portion of every day singing a sacred song. These songs are sung in a specific order and are also learned in said order. It is believed that singing these songs helps maintain the balance over the particualy aspect, element, or concept that the song is supposed to have influence over. Mezzo has learned the sacred songs of the sun, the moon, fire, water, thunder, earth, time, wind, the seasons, first passage. Each song has over 70 verses and takes nearly two hours to sing. Mezzo with usually sing these songs with in her lair, but may also sing them while carrying out her daily chores.

Sirens/Syrens:
Sirens have appeared throughout mythology and history in different forms. The Greeks believed that sirens had the body of an eagle, and the head of a beautiful woman. The Norse believed them to be like almost like mermaids but with the heads of six white wolves attached around their waist. The messopotamians believed sirens were woman with hands and feet like the claws of hawks, with large bird's wings extending from where their ears should be. Often in stories and art they were dipicted playing some manner of instrument, and told to have had voices so beautiful no man could resist them. In such stories, sirens used their beautiful and devine voices to learn unwary men to their deaths in one manner or another. The one notable exception to this are the legends of Irish and Scottish tradition which tell of the sorrowful and maddening wail of the banshee. Banshees were believed to be horrid apparitions who's very cries caused pain, suffering and destruction. Their eerie voices driving men and women alike insane often running to their demise in the woods of the Emerald Isle, clawed and gnashed to death on the moors. Unbeknownst to all but a rare few, is that all of the above mythological beings are in fact the same creature, and look nothing like the creature's actual appearance.

Sirens have a serpentine, almost eel-like body; tapering from their torso and hips until they flare out again at the end of their tails. They also posses a pair of wings attached just inside and below their shoulder blades. These wings are not feathery like a bird's are chitenous like an insects; the functional surface of their wings is a thin, leathery membrane like those of a bat, but without the distal bones running through them. A single strand of fibrous tissue running along the outer edge of the wings applies tension as necessary to loosen or stiffen the wing surface for better flight control and manueverability. Unlike serpents or eels however, Sirens do not possess scales of any sort, but rather a soft supple skin. Their various colorings the result of natural skin pigmentation, with the exception of the white circular marks on their bodies. These patches are not skin, but a membrane similar to the ears of a frog, only instead of being used to listen to sound, they function like natural speakers and amplifiers helping the siren transmit their unique vocalizations. These organs are also used as a means stealth, producing sound waves out of phase and canceling the noise of their approach.

Sirens also possess the ability to alter their physical form to a limited extent. The form seen on the left side of the above picture is the form Sirens tend to use on the ground and in the trees. This is a slow and clumsy form, the lack of belly scales means that to move, Sirens must use an undulating motion like that of an inchworm or use an awkward sideways geit to travel. Although, in the trees, this form allows Sirens a surprising degree of mobility as they climb and swing from branch to branch. This form is most often used while waiting for victems to hear their songs or in and around their lairs. The form seen from both front and back views on the right side is the one Sirens use when taking to the air or water. This is their preferred method of traveling, especially over long distances.

Another noteworthy characteristic of Sirens is their voices. Observation has revealed that it is only the females who sing, the males being relegated to a sort second class with Siren society. All sirens, both male and female possess incredible hearing with an audible range from .25Hz all the way to 1MHz. Both male and female vocal ranges can dip into the infrasonic range with frequencies as low 20Hz - .25Hz, allowing the species to communicate over large distances. However, it is only the females can reach the upper frequencies. Female sirens can reach vocalizations as high as 600kHz. Bear in mind that the range of human hearing is from 20HZ to just 20kHz. This is possible because female sirens actually have four sets of vocal chords. Another contributing factor is that Sirens have jaws very similar to nagas and serpents in that their jaws can unhinge. This allows the sirens to alter the shape of their mouths into ideal resonating chambers to produce more effective sound with less effort. Another astonishing factor is that Sirens have an unusual set of lungs. One lung is roughly human sized, while the other stretches from the bronchial tubes almost all the way down to the end of their tails. This allows two things, first that sirens can hold their breath for nearly 18 minutes on average; and second it allows their voices, for the females atleast, to reach volumes appraoching as high as 24dB. To put this into perspective here are some comparisons: Powersaw- 110dB, Human pain threshold- 120dB, jet engine 20 meters away- 140dB, Blue whale- 188dB, Space shuttle launch- 220dB, volcano- 272dB. Also note that anything over 170dB tends to shatter all glass including windows, car windshields, even skyscraper windows at high floors. This extraordinary loudness has both it's benefits and disadvantages. The concussive force of low frequencies at high volume can cause internal hemoraging and even organ failure depending on length of exposure. High frequencies, or ultrasound, can cause structural damage even to the point of shattering bones and severly fracturing concrete. For a male siren, there is no greater danger than mating as a females orgasmic scream can cause severe brain damage, death, and in rare cases it can even cause the male's head to explode.

Siren hunting tactics are fairly straightforward. Lacking in terms of physical strength; female sirens wait, drawing in prey with their songs. Once an a victem comes close enough, the siren will slash at it with her paralizing, envenomed talons. From there, things depended on where the Siren was in relation to their den. If the Siren feels she is safe enough, close enough to her den, and has the time, she will unhinge her jaws and swallow her prey whole like serpents and nagas; or if they otherwise feel rushed or threatened, they'll use their talons to slice into their victem's belly and then hastily devour the stomach and internal organs. This is impart for two reasons, first devouring a victem whole makes the Siren too heavy and thus not able to fly or swim very well; second they have weak digestive enzymes and are able to break down and gain nutrients only from the soft tissues. Things like bones, metals, and even cartilage must eventually be regurgitated in the safety of their dens or atleast somewhere nearby in what is best described as a siren dumping ground.

Sirens have a matriarchal and druidic society, they value nature, music, and song above all else. They feel it is their duty to guard nature, to punish those who would pervert it, and to return the foresake crystal forests (cities) back to nature. Their chief goddess Haku'nerpta, sang the universe into existance. It was the words of her song that brought forth all of creation, and furthermore, Sirens believe that when Haku'nerpta stops singing, all things will end. In keeping with the tennents of their faith, Sirens reguard any other creature with a talent for music or song as being worthy of both mercy and respect as such creatures share in the divine gift.

Sirens tend to look upon other races as inferior to themselves because other races have neither the Sirens' gift of song, nor their connection with nature. Those non-Siren's who show a talent for music and especially song are afforded certain graces and privelages. It is worth noting however that nagas and sirens are particularly offened by eachother's presence. Not to the point of violence, but definately bordering upon disgust. This is mainly due to th fact that each species has a degree of a superiotrity complex. Nagas believe that Sirens are weakling airheaded songstresses who sing for their supper rather than actually having the intelligence and tenacity to hunt out their meals. Sirens, on the other hand, believe that nagas are little more than disgraced and poor imitations of Sirens. A failed creation of their mother goddess who disappointed with the nagas violence and seeming inability to share in the divine gift of song. In short, Sirens believe that nagas are a failed sort of prototype for themselves, and nagas consider Sirens lazy and weak and innately stupid; hence their mutual antagonism towards each other.

Powers:
Stealth: As clumsy as a Siren may be on land, the white circular organs on their bodies function as a means to cancel the noise of their movements, making them perfectly silent as long as they concentrate. This however, does nothing to hide other signs of their presence. So while they cannot be heard unless they wish to be, Sirens can still be seen, sniffed out, detected using their body heat (infra red), or even detected by their auras. They are still however immune to all manner of sonar and echo location as these methods require the use of sound. This is a racial ability that all Sirens possess.

Mimicry: With their affinity for sound, this is more of a natural talent than a power per se. Sirens need only to hear a specific sound three times to be able to immitate it perfectly. This counts for voices, animal calls, even artificial sounds or those made be machines, they can even reproduce pure tones. This is a racial ability that all Sirens possess.

Morphing: As noted above the arms, fins, and tail are able to morph from the state in the left side of the above picture to the state seen on the right side of the picture. The extension of the wings and fins, as well as the expansion of the tail gives Sirens superb manuerverabilty and excellent speed both in the air and in the water. This is a racial ability that all Sirens possess. The process takes roughly 30 seconds to complete and a fair amount of concentration, so while in the midsts of morphing, a Siren is unable to use their other powers until the
process has completed.

Illusions (Racial): Mezzo can cast an illusion over herself to make her appear as an undead Banshee, a mermaid with wolve's head about her waist, or as a large golden plumed eagle with the head of a beautiful woman.

Illusions (personal): A Siren's illusions are just that, magically created projections with or without sound. For instance, an illusory wall of fire would lie like a torrent of flames, sound like a roaring hypocaust, but would produce no heat and be easily dispelled just by touching it. Mezzo has mastered the illusions of throwing a fireball, casting a bolt of lightning, a wall of fire, a rushing torrent of water, a tidal wave, and up to three copies of herself.

Sonar \ Echo Location: Sirens can use high frequency ultrasound as a method of detection and hunting in lightless environments.

Speak with Insects: With the sirens exquisite hearing they can discern the soft and subtle vibrations by which insects communicate. With their gifts in music, they can use an instrument to enable them to speak with all things that chirp and buzz. For Mezzo, this requires the use of her violin.

Speak with Plants: Sirens have long known that plants communicate and that they have only to listen. Their words ride on the wind for any who will deing to hear them. The Sirens in their druidic practices have learned the language of the flowers and the trees and how to talk to the plants so that nomatter where they are, they will never be lonely. For Mezzo, this requires the use of her Flute.

Songs: The amazing vocal and musical abilites of the siren affect any and all who can hear voices and instruments. However, that is also their inherent weakness. Sirens are virtually powerless against the deaf and those creatures whose range of hearing is outside the frequencies a siren is currently singing in. Those with adequate protection for their ears are also able to mitigate the effect of a siren's songs depending on how loud they sing. Sirens are by nature immune to each other's songs and music.

Dirge of Sorrow: All non-sirens who hear this song are overwhelmed with unbearable sadness. A feeling of irrepressable loss and mourning. Victems are often overcome with feelings of absolute despair, some even give up the will to live. Those unfortunate enough to hear this melodic weapon often describe hallucinations of the deaths of loved ones or betrayal at the hands of those most cared about. This song will take the listener to depths of despair and sorrow that few mortal creatures have ever glimpsed without slipping into madness. And while the effects end the moment the Siren stops singing; the victem, if they haven't already committed suicide, will forever be marked by the memory of the experience.

Requiem of Solitude: This song instills in listeners a soul crushing loneliness. Victems are stricken with feeling of utter abandonment. The describe hallucinations of world drained of all color and life, their surroundings become a a barren wasteland with listener as the only living thing for as far as can be seen. Those not of siren descent who hear this song are psychologically battered with the idea that they will never see anyone again, not loved ones, not even enemies. They become convinced that they are the only living thing left in the universe, abandonded and forgotten even by the very gods themselves. Individuals who are unlucky enough to be subjected to the Requiem of Solitude often experience a desperate need to see or hear from their loved ones frequently breaking down into fits of tears and panic until they assured the most important people in their lives are alright.

Aria of Rapture: This is the quintessential "Siren's Call" of legend that has led so many men, sailors in particular, to their deaths. Truth be told, the song effects women as well, but few women ventured in the wilds and seas during ancient times so men were the most frequent victems by far. The beckoning notes of the song gives the listener an irrestable desire to go to the source and be at the siren's side. The allure of the creature's music and the desire of it's victems to give themselves to the Siren is beyond reason. Victems have been known to fight and slay commrades who stand between them and the singing Siren. Indeed Sailors of olde have often told tales of how members of the crew who listened to the Aria could think of nothing else but seeking out the Siren and offering themselves to it. Once the siren ceases their singing, the affected people typically have no memory or what they did while in their rapture.

Carol of Fury: The Carol of Fury is a song of war. Victems of this song are possessed by uncontrollable rage and bloodlust. It causes a veritable need for violence and bloodshed, the effect not unlike what is seen from Norse berserkers. Those who hear this song will lash out and strike at any and every living thing, their eyes bloodshot with hate and anger. The rush of adrenaline is at times so great, victems feel no pain, despite whatever wounds they might recieve. Their are stories of how some victems exert so much strength that their muscles
pull hard enough to break their own bones from the stress. Heart attacks are not uncommon as victems push themselves beyond the point of exhaustion, their bodies unable to cope with the efforts they mount in their attempts to kill any living thing they find. Once the song is finished survivors immediately feel all their wounds, self inflicted and otherwise. Debilitating exhaustion sets in quickly, and often so does shock and confusion at the carnage and death around them.

Sonnet of Suffering: The shrill, screetching notes of the Sonnet of Suffering cause victems to experience unimaginable pain and agony all over and throughout their bodies. It is as if the listeners were subjected to every concievable form of torture simulatiouly and on every inch of their bodies both inside and out. Despite their excrutiating delusions, the victem is not injured by the song in the least, but rather by their thrashing and flailing about and hitting nearby objects. The Sonnet of Suffering is unique in that the more intelligent and imaginative the listener is, the more elaborate and effective means they can concieve of to cause pain; thus increasing their own agony by virtue of their minds and personality. The more cruel an individual is at heart, the greater the pain they expeirence when hearing this song.

Hymn of Elation: This rarely heard Siren's song brings with it, a giddy sense of happyness. Those who hear it will be filled joy, breaking out into laughs and giggles regardless of what actually may be happening around them at the moment. Victems have been seen smiling, even laughing as they watched loved ones die or had their limbs broken and severed. Mishcievous Sirens will use this song when there is already a festival or other some such revelry going on to heighten everyone's enjoyment and add to the silliness of the antic of party-goers.

Ballad of Solace: Another rarely heard song of the Sirens' is the Ballad of Solace; bringing comfort and easing the physical and emotional suffering of those who hear it. This song tends to make beneficiaries not be so affected by their troubles. It puts the heart and mind at ease, calming those in need of catharsis.

Psalm of Dread: This is the so-called wail of the banshee. Not really a cry of sort but an actual song, the Psalm of Dread instill absolute terror and fear in the minds of all those who hear it without Siren blood in their veins. Paranoia sets in quickly making every dark corner hide a monster, every shadow conceal some unspeakable evil and every sound signals the approach of doom incarnate. Victems have known to go mad and suffer heart attacks from the pure panic the song causes.

Lullaby of Tranquility: Another rarely heard song, the peaceful notes of this song pacifies and relaxes listeners; causing them to lose all will to fight, all sense of anger or aggression, all fear. Beneficiaries feel a soothing calm overtake them, washing away all troubles and negative emotions and making them want to relax or even doze off.

Song of Haku'nerpta:
screams

This destructive set of notes can only be performed by a chorus of at least thirty Sirens or more. The cataclysmic verses affect an area of roughly 2 sq. mi. Being of a druidic culture, the Sirens use this song to bring destruction to comlex and unnatural cities so that nature can reassert it rightful place and reclaim the land that other cultures have desecrated with their buildings and needless waste. Buildings and roads in the affected area will crumbled and be overrun with vines and plants, large rocks and fissure erupting from the earth beneath the concrete and asphalt. Contrary to popular belief, Atlantis wasn't done in and sunken as a result of it's own tenchnology run amuck. The ancient civilization was wiped out by several choruses of Sirens performing the Song of Haku'nerpta.
