Morning, all! My name's Oran, and welcome to the first episode of what I hope will be a regular series: Movie Night and Meal.
I think I should make a quick introduction before I really start off, my name's Oran Sykes. At the moment, I'm part of His Eminence's Mercantile Fleet, but I'm just about done with that and I'm about to start college. Where, I'm not quite sure, I'm either going to study cooking or filmmaking. But I can figure that out later.
So, first things first, I was an army brat. My mother was MACO, my father was a pilot for the Fleet, they met on leave, eventually wound up with nine children, including me. So naturally, going into the military was something of a given for at least one of us. And that happened to be me.
My service record was OK, nothing to write home about. I didn't even see combat for about three years, which amused my mother to no end. Eventually that ended, though. My fleet came out of hyperspace too close to a planet and we crashed. It wasn't even enemy action, just a freak of nature. Speaking of which...
...sorry, got a little distracted. Out of three hundred, only about twenty were rescued, ten of them requiring advanced medical care. I was one of the worst: not only did I need extensive surgery to rebuild my arm, legs, and ribcage, I was also left with a bad case of shell shock. I was almost drummed out, but I got lucky. Still, I thought about taking a sabatical and finding something else to do just in case.
Being stuck as a file clerk for several months, I had a lot of time to watch videos on the Web. Most of these turned out to be cooking or movie clips, and I slowly became hooked on both. Which inspired this little show, where I get to talk about not only good dinner, but films that pair up perfectly with them. Like Binging with Babish, but with more talking about movies.
