Character Name: Raye Marina
Age: 17/22
Race: Human
Occupation: Pokemon Trainer/Ranger
(The slashes above indicate two alternate forms.)
Appearance: As above, mainly. Moderately tall, lightly built, hair blonde, eyes pale green.
Usual clothing: Goldenrod-yellow jacket over a loose shirt in some soft color (blue, green, etc.). Wears a green neckerchief with a pokeball's outline in white on one of the corners, which sometimes gets used as a headband instead. Wears fairly rugged trainers, socks (of course), and a pair of white sweatpants with a gold stripe down each side.
Hometown: Violet City (Johto)
A trainer, yes... but far from your typical one. In fact, for much of his life, Raye had no intention of ever becoming a trainer. It wasn't until a fateful encounter with a certain Pokemon Prof. that Raye was set reluctantly on the path to Indigo Plateau...
Why reluctantly? Well, as is conveniently noted above, Raye was born and raised in Violet City. (See that house on the map that you can't actually get to without noclip? That's his.) Born naturally close to nature, Raye ended up drawn quite often to Sprout Tower. While simultaneously developing an aversion to Bellsprout, Raye came to train quite a bit with the Elder within the swaying tower, and with the old man's help his gift gained even greater power.
Gift? Why, yes. Any Pokemon trainer worth his salt knows of gym leader Sabrina, the telepath; well, Raye is an empath. A sort of counterpart to a telepath; whereas Sabrina can read people's thoughts, Raye can read their emotions. The young boy was born with this gift to see into another person's soul, and training in the Tower only strengthed it, giving him clearer insight into the emotions of humans as well as letting him sense those of Pokemon as well.
As for what all this had to do with his reluctance, well, Violet City is frequented by trainers, as one might expect; challengers for Falkner and explorers seeking the famed Ruins of Alph often pass through. He's seen many people and knows their emotions and those of their Pokemon, and precious few are in accord with each other. Trainers in his eyes proceed without regard to or respect for their Pokemon's feelings. And so, his tenth birthday came and went without even the slightest interest in making the pilgrimage to New Bark Town and Professor Elm.
And then, halfway through his sixteenth year, things changed. Raye met the famous Professor Oak outside of town on the route to Goldenrod. Intrigued by the young trainer, Oak asked him to run a delivery to New Bark for him and immediately called ahead to Elm. When he arrived, Elm agreed with Oak's assessment: Raye's empathic gift and personality would make him a fine trainer. After quite a lot of convincing, Raye finally left New Bark with a Chikorita in hand, a dark rival with a Totodile whose emotions alone terrified him, and a parcel to deliver (again).
And now? ... Well, that all really depends on what you call "now"...
Trainer (age 17): Either along the path of his journey or (more frequently) at its conclusion; Raye's Pokemon have grown tremendously, to the point where he's begun to consider challenging even Red and the Unlimited Elite Four.
Ranger (age 22): Some time after conquering the fully-powered League, Raye finally decided to retire from training and took up a position as one of Johto's few actual Pokemon Rangers instead. Naturally, offered with freedom, none of his Pokemon accepted... and so now he's always accompanied by one of his "dream team". Equipped with a Fine Styler, he might turn up just about anywhere.
Either way, Raye is generally carefree and a bit laid back. He's disdainful of many trainers, though genuinely respectful to those who actually treat their Pokemon well and respect their emotions. He's generally friendly to those with good emotions, however, and terrified of those with truly evil ones. Spiritual and devoted to his team, if you can earn Raye's respect you'll have a talented and caring friend.
Raye's Team:
(Note: There are seven members here, which means that at least one of them will be in the PC/Pokewalker at all times. Also, after becoming a Ranger, Raye is accompanied generally by only one member of his team.)
Beron (Meganium)
Stats at level 50: HP 148, Atk 98, Def 119, S-Atk 108, S-Def 97, Spd 103
Techniques: Magical Leaf (20), Synthesis (6), Sunny Day (5), SolarBeam (10), Aromatherapy (Assist)
Overgrow: Raises the power of Grass-type moves when HP is below 1/3.
Holding: King's Rock (worn atop the head like a crown)
Rash-natured. The leader of Raye's team and his first ever Pokemon. Despite having been somewhat forced on him, Raye is extremely fond of his right-hand fighter. Beron is, in return, very protective of his Trainer, standing up to even the most fearsome of legendary Pokemon for Raye's sake... as well as playing the "tough father" when Raye's being out of line or endangering himself. The Meganium is particularly talented in the use of his healing scent, helping to calm Raye in dangerous times as well as to keep his fragile psychic mind clear against Dark influence.
Nura (Pidgeot)
Stats at level 50: HP 159, Atk 98, Def 106, S-Atk 99, S-Def 88, Spd 100
Techniques: Fly (15), Aerial Ace (20), Roost (12), Hyper Beam (5), Gust (Assist)
Tangled Feet: When Nura is confused, her Speed is increased.
Holding: Scope Lens (worn like a pair of goggles over her eyes)
Relaxed-natured. Raye's second Pokemon, he has actually known her since long before he ever held a Poke-ball, when he would often end up patching her up after one of her many scrapes. Out of gratitude and friendship, once Raye became a Trainer, Nura herself literally pecked her way into one of his Poke-balls and became a part of his team. She remains just as loyal to him now as she did in those days, when he would bandage her wing no matter how many times she injured it fighting the other local Pidgeys. Despite being scrappy even to this day, Nura is watchful and tactical in battle, capable of shrugging off strong physical moves that most birds would crumble before.
Togekiss (Nysos)
Stats at level 50: HP 154, Atk 71, Def 115, S-Atk 145, S-Def 130, Spd 102
Techniques: Extrasensory (30), Yawn (10), Wish (10), Metronome (10)
Serene Grace: Doubles the probability of added effects occurring from moves like Psychic.
Holding: BrightPowder (sprinkled among his feathers, making his coloration appear even whiter)
Quirky-natured. Hatched from an egg, Raye soon found himself with a Togepi with a very surprising move technique. Slightly psychic himself, Togepi proved even more receptive than others to forming an empathic bond with Raye, quickly evolving and proving a strong ally. Extremely silly and liking nothing better than making both self and Trainer happy, Togekiss is playful and affectionate to all, but Raye in particular. In battle, he enjoys greatly testing his luck with Metronome... which has an odd tendency to call up legendary signature techniques like Spacial Rend... o.o
Pele (Ninetails)
Stats at level 50: HP 139, Atk 87, Def 96, S-Atk 99, S-Def 108, Spd 125
Techniques: Flamethrower (15), Ominous Wind (6), Fire Spin (15), Safeguard (25), Will-o-Wisp (Assist)
Flash Fire: Pele is immune to Fire-type attacks, and if hit by one her own Fire-type attacks deal extra damage.
Holding: Grip Claw (magatama-shaped claw, worn around her neck like a talisman)
Bold-natured. [Backstory undecided as of yet...] Enjoys closeness, though somewhat aloof and generally does not initiate contact. Has a somewhat regal personality, and acts accordingly in battle, either with punishing fire, divine protection, or the kyuubi's curse.
Nerei (Vaporeon)
Stats at level 50: HP 200, Atk 83, Def 82, S-Atk 117, S-Def 105, Spd 92
Techinques: Aurora Beam (20), Surf (15), Ice Beam (12), Aqua Ring (20), Aurora Burst (Assist)
Water Absorb: When Nerei is struck by a Water-type attack, he recovers HP instead of taking damage.
Holding: Shell Bell (worn around his neck like a pendant)
Impish-natured. Originally an Eevee entrusted to Raye, Nerei willingly evolved to help him cross the sea. Extremely playful and fond of pranks, Nerei is a bit of an attention hog, tending to either pout or butt in if he feels like he's being ignored. Although sort of a clown, Nerei has a lot of endurance in battle and does his best to repay his loving Trainer.
Seid (Dragonair)
Stats at level 50: HP 133, Atk 103, Def 70, S-Atk 99, S-Def 93, Spd 98
Techniques: Aqua Tail (12), Safeguard (25), Dragon Pulse (12), Fire Blast (5), Dragonbreath (assist)
Shed Skin: After each turn, Seid has a chance of self-healing any poison, burn, freeze, paralysis, or sleep condition on her.
Holding: Eviolite (worn on a chain around her neck)
Gentle-natured. Calm and quiet, Seid tends to be subtle about her affection, simply leaning against or coiling around someone. Entrusted to Raye as a Dratini and initially hostile, Seid soon came to recognize the respect and love Raye bears for the dragon-types and now is loyal and caring towards him. Although somewhat frail, she fights hard, using many "sacred" techniques to ward her allies or to overcome the enemy.
Tenji (Raichu)
Stats at level 50: HP 135, Atk 119, Def 74, S-Atk 115, S-Def 85, Spd 120
Techniques: Charge Beam (12), Sweet Kiss (10), Discharge (15), Double Team (15), Discharge (Assist)
Static: If the enemy uses a move that makes contact with Tenji, they may become paralyzed.
Holding: Wide Lens (monocle-style aiming lens mounted over his right eye)
Naughty-natured. The last of Raye's Pokemon to be obtained. [Backstory still under construction.] Playful and with just a hint of the dark prankster, Tenji does enjoy cuddling but might give the other person a tiny shock. In battle, Tenji is a tactical fighter who makes up for his frail defenses by confounding the enemy and then striking with electrical power.
