Ren Amamiya (a.k.a. Akira Kurusu) appears to be a normal student on the outside, and he acts like it too, scoring many high marks. However, in secret, he is also the leader of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, a group of vigilantes who fight back against the corruption of society by stealing the hearts of evildoers...not literally, though.

With the codename "Joker", the group operates using the paralel reality known as the Metaverse, a realm born from the cognition of humanity. Whilst there, the Phantom Thieves are able to steal the distorted desires of evildoers after materializing them into physical form, allowing them to become honest people and confess.

(PSA: Deep knowledge of Persona 5 is not required to play with this character. Also, he can be played in any setting, not just modern.)

Backstory

Ren Amamiya used to be nothing more than a simple second-year student who lived in a rural area, studying diligently and scoring high marks as a result. However, everything changed one night when he heard yelling during the road back home. He saw a particular drunken politician sexually harassing a woman by the sidewalk and chose to intervene, but the man ended up falling down in his stupor and injured his head. The politician blamed it all on Ren and forced the woman to testify against him, resulting in a one-year probation sentence that went down on his permanent record, which led to him being expelled from school.

After this, Ren was forced to move to Tokyo in order to transfer to Shujin Academy, the only school who was willing to accept him despite his criminal record. He moved in with an acquaintance of his parents, Sojiro Sakura, and began living in the attic of Café Leblanc for the period of his probation. He had intended to quietly wait out his sentence and stay out of trouble, but fate had other plans for him: on his first day of school, he accidentally discovered the Metaverse thanks to a mysterious app on his phone - it was a bizarre paralel world born from cognition that was home to monsters and magic.

It was there when he would awaken to his hidden power: the power of his Persona, which allowed him to conjure a manifestation of his rebellious spirit and unleash magic attacks. He soon found out that he wasn't the only one with this ability either - a small number of people he met during his time in Tokyo would become aware of the Metaverse and awaken to their power whilst in there as well. This group would eventually become the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, a group that targets evildoers and utilizes the Metaverse to steal their distorted desires, transforming them into honest men. With this, Ren had a new double life.

He continued to wait out his probation and live a honest student life, but in secret, he would fight back against the injustices of society by stealing the hearts of the wicked and inspiring those who are facing oppression. Ren is especially powerful thanks to his Wild Card ability, allowing him to own multiple Personas and have access to many supernatural abilities. Thanks to his masterful stealth, overwhelming power, and the experience of multiple heists under his belt, no treasure or heart is truly safe from this Phantom Thief.
