Star Fairy
A rare type of fairy, but can be found worldwide, owing to the special circumstances of their birth. When a nature fairy, normally born from flowers, would emerge from its blossom for the first time under the dazzling streaking lights of a meteor shower, the magic born from space intruding on the atmosphere of our planet will cause them to transform before birth into a
fata stella. While they in a sense are "born" from
fata vulgaris, star fairies are a separate species entirely and should not be considered a sub-type. They share no special connection with plants, though some researchers believe their presence long-term can help to extend a flower's longevity if it is the same type they were born from.
Instead, star fairies show a strong connection to the night sky. Usually nocturnal and drawn to the stars, it is said that the beauty of the night sky is what draws the former nature fairy away from the flowers of Earth. Their eyes have an extremely wide range of sensitivity, allowing them to view extremely faint stars during the night while remaining able to avoid being crippled by daylight. Additionally, since iron is produced naturally by stars, they are immune to the normal fairy weakness against iron, replacing it instead with heavier, precious Earthen metals such as gold or platinum.
In other words, if you're aimin' to give me somethin' pretty, make sure it's steel or something like that. Put a gold band on this girl's finger and you're gonna get more dust than the whole Midwest. ~Revisse
Regarding the dust of star fairies, it can have two different effects, depending on application and the fairy's own intent. When applied carefully to the human eye, it improves light-gathering capabilities; while requiring caution in daylight, this can allow an observer in dark clear skies to view stars down to tenth magnitude. Rumor has it that Galileo developed the idea for his telescope after an experience with a star fairy he saved. However, if applied as a defense, it will negate the power of gravity completely on the person, leaving them in potentially a very tricky spot indeed, particularly if it wears off abruptly...
A final note: in addition to having to be born under a meteor shower, star fairies can only be born from a limited number of flowers. Currently only twelve such flowers are known, and researchers tentatively link each one to one of the twelve houses of the Zodiac; there are slight differences between fairies born from each of these twelve, leading some to classify
fata stella as composed of twelve different subspecies, each designated by the associated zodiac.
Revisse Herself
Occasionally, the motion of our planet through the comet trails that make up most of our meteor showers takes it through a denser part, or many parts at once. The resulting burst can create thousands of meteors per hour, and is known as a meteor storm. Revisse was born under just such a storm, the first sight to her eyes when her marigold opened its petals the sight of the October Draconid shower raging so powerfully that meteors shot across the sky within seconds of each other. Needless to say, what emerged from that marigold was not a nature fairy, but a
fata stella leo, her wings bright and wide, reflecting the blazing lights roaring through the dark skies above.
This particular marigold happened to be located in a little bayou in Louisiana, and so it was to the world of the American South that Revisse emerged from her flower. And while she found the remnant racism utterly stupid, most of the rest of the culture down South she fell utterly in love with. Enough so that she started learning the kind of magic known as glamer so that she could mingle among them! Using this glamer, she can appear to be a normal human girl instead of an eight-inch high fairy fluttering along. However, it's far from a foolproof power, especially in the presence of her weaknesses or in the view of the magically inclined. When using it, she tends to dress like the girl in
this picture. Her measurements remain the same, except for her 6'2" height and ~135 lb weight, and yes she keeps that lovely green hair of hers!
Of course, the other main reason that she took up glamer-casting was to be able to visit these places of learning humans called "schools" so she could learn more about the stars she's loved since her birth! She thus now wanders most of the nation, poking into various colleges here and there to pick up anything and everything she can regarding astronomy and scribbling it all down in a set of notebooks she carries along everywhere with her. She tends to keep on the move, though, to avoid calling attention to herself... fairies don't tend to earn enough money to pay for tuition, after all! If pressed for a name, she'll give that of Revisse Patula, the name she chose for herself based on her Southern heritage and her marigold origin. (She has a fairy name as well, but it's a lucky boy or girl indeed that can pry it out of her!)
As for the girl herself? She's pretty much as advertised on the tin. A fairy in every sense of the word, but having been born and spent years in the bayou country, she's very much a soft-spoken Southern belle. No amount of time up North has been able to wear away her accent so far, and no matter where she is she'll dress her chosen part. At the same time, she's still very much a fairy, so mind yourself around her, and heaven help you if you break an agreement with her... Beyond that she's quite cheery and peacable, preferring places with not a lot of light and the evening hours. Playful, curious, mostly friendly, and a surprisingly good cook. Or maybe not so surprisingly. Southern belle fairy, after all!
