Backstory

Born beneath a sky split between storm and stars, Ryuji came into the world as something neither wholly human nor fully dragon. His mother, a wandering scholar, had sought the wisdom of ancient beings, only to fall in love with one. His father, a noble lung dragon, had watched over rivers and winds for centuries, never expecting to bind his fate to a mortal. From their union, Ryuji was born—a creature of two worlds, yet belonging to neither.

From the moment he took his first breath, his existence was met with uncertainty. In human settlements, his draconic traits marked him as an omen, a child cursed by celestial forces. Whispers followed him, and wary gazes weighed heavy on his small shoulders. The elders of the village spoke of balance, of things that should not be, and in their fear, they deemed him an anomaly.

Yet it was not only humans who hesitated to accept Ryuji. His father’s kin, the ancient dragons, regarded him with cold detachment. A half-blood, they called him. Weak. Unworthy. To them, a dragon’s form was sacred, an inheritance of millennia-old lineage, and for a mere halfbreed to share in that legacy was an insult. Even his ability to shift between his forms was seen as unnatural—his transformation lacked the fluid grace of the elders, the raw power of a true dragon.

Ryuji was trapped between two worlds, never enough for either.

As a child, he bore these burdens alone. He played in the forests, where the trees did not care for his lineage. He spoke to the rivers, where his father’s spirit whispered but never answered. He would sit beneath the moon, tracing the glowing runes along his skin—marks of power he had yet to understand. And he would wonder if the world had made a mistake in creating him.

No fire burned within him, no defiant heart ready to fight back against the world that had rejected him. Ryuji wilted under the weight of loneliness, carrying every whispered insult, every scornful glance like a wound that refused to heal. His shifting form brought no pride, only pain—each transformation felt as though his very essence was being torn apart, as if his body itself resented what he was.

There were moments of kindness, but they did not erase the hurt. A villager who pitied him enough to offer scraps of food. A traveling warrior who saw only wasted potential. A spirit deep in the mountains that whispered, “Your blood is your own,” but even those words felt hollow in his heart.

As he grew, the scars of his past did not fade—they festered, buried deep beneath layers of self-doubt and sorrow. He did not dream of carving a place for himself in the world; he merely longed to exist without pain. But the world is unkind to those who do not fight back. And so, he drifted through life like a shadow, neither dragon nor human, forever lost between what he was and what he could never be.

Ryuji was born struggling. And struggle left him broken.

One day, while he sat alone under the comfort of the trees, what looked like a spirit floated towards him. Ryuji tilted his head in confusion and wonder. The spirit grew and spun, revealing a gateway that pulled him inside. He seemed to fly through the cosmos for hours, until he landed somewhere else entirely.

Looking around, he was in a vast park, and to his surprise, there were many, many different kinds of creatures; most accepted him, some not at all… and some a little too much…

Ryuji learned quite quickly that the population of this new world practiced a quite horrifying tradition that he would vaguely recall in few old tales: Vore. He was utterly shaken by this; he avoided any and every creature that looked even remotely terrifying, and mostly kept to himself.

He has practiced some magics, and, with an unknown girl’s help, received his own Bag of Holding! Ryuji was prepared now, but fear outweighed his readiness.
