An avid consumer of fiction, especially the kind of pulp that academics would consider vulgar and without redeeming literate value, Sarai Hito could never get enough of the exploits of the ninja that shared her name. She would secretly fantasize of her own escapades, sneaking into dark facilities under cover of night, sneaking past guards one by one, knocking out any fool enough to detect her, until she finally reached her target and... well, being grateful that she preferred skirts. Her heroine only appeared in books sold in unusual venues, after all. The kind of place that required ID to make a purchase from. Naturally, a good ninja would have a good fake...

Nobody's quite sure when her line between reality and fantasy started to blur. Worse yet, nobody's quite sure how the lines between reality and her fantasy ended up blurring. Regardless, the fact remained that certain students around her school started disappearing, and every so often she'd end up with a new accessory around the same time; one that just happened to be very similar to one the missing student owned. Whether through ignorance or respect, nobody ever called her out, even when rumors began to spread through the school. She was a witch, she was with the secret police, she was an alien, she shoved them up her butt... all ridiculous, of course. Right?

Sarai soon realized that she was already living her dream. Shortly before graduation, she disappeared. No family around to speak of, no friends privy to her whereabouts, she vanished into the night, seeking her fortune - and more than that, her legacy. She aimed to become as great a name as her fictitious heroine, or even greater. Though rumors quieted and curiosity waned, she wasn't the only one in operating in shadows, and she had earned herself some rivals before taking off. They likely wouldn't be the last, either...
