Bakeneko are creatures born from cats mistreated by humans in their lives. When the cat dies-- whether it is that they are killed by humans or they pass in a different way-- their spirits transform into what is called the Bakeneko. They cause torment for all who cross their path, sewing bad luck and misfortune wherever they cast their gaze.

Their magical influence is strong, though they are still lesser demons. As they age, their tails split. This can happen up to eight times to total in at nine tails. For this reason, it is seen as "lucky" to kill them and remove their tails-- the more tails you cut off, the luckier you are to be. The systematic slaughtering of the bakeneko has forced them as a species to take on the role of vagabonds, never staying in one place for long out of fear of being caught.

Sayo is a bakeneko like any other-- black ears and tail, forced to wander from place to place in order to survive. She remembers her past life and the abuse she suffered by humans and as such tends to be inherently mistrusting and impatient with their kind (though she doesn't much trust yokai either).

Having lived her first round as a cat, she still doesn't understand many customs of this world. She tries her best to present herself in a dignified and regal way (hence her outfit). Because of this worry of seeming undignified, she often comes off as seeming... very stiff. In addition to that, due to what she is, she's extremely skittish (much like many regular cats are when faced with surprises) and hates the feeling of being trapped.

After wandering for so long and constantly being on the run, this cat has finally found a place where she feels moderately comfortable. That place is the realm (and home) of the Obrophidian. They met by chance-- he exploring and enjoying his retirement, she a hungry cat. He offered her some cream and slowly gained her trust. Now she sees him as a sort of pet (though he probably sees her similarly!) and they are great companions.

Trivia:
1. Though her appearance is more human than animal, her behaviour is more feral/animal than it is human.

2. She is selectively mute. Meaning, she has the ability to speak, she just chooses not to most of the time. If she can get away with saying nothing, then she will definitely not say anything. However, if she warms up to someone, she will more than likely come to speak more. As such, she talks often in the (private) presence of Daniel Obrove (though he still thinks she's very quiet.)

3. Her clothing is manufactured by her magic, so if it becomes damaged, she can fix it at will. This also means that it can be altered to fit any occasion at will, though she normally chooses her typical outfit if possible.

4. The Bakeneko are the reason why black cats are seen as unlucky by superstition.
