A child, once wayward, came to the forest and asked. "Why, father tree, has life been so cruel onto one such as I?"
Father tree, in his ancient wisdom, pondered his answer. "Because, young one, those who see the greatest suffering are those who know best how to protect others from that pain."
The child considered this. And then she answered. "That's dumb, father tree."
He laughed good naturedly. "In time, child, you will understand."
Turns out he was right, after all.
Once an ill-tempered, predacious street brat, Serra found herself taken in by an older human woman who lived alone in the woods. First, that woman taught her to be kind to others. To treat other living beings with the respect she expected back. To be kind to others, even when they were not kind to her.
The young lamia took well to these lessons, and within the decade, had taken up the mantle of the aging druid's successor. The forest's future ensured, the old woman passed into the spirits of the woods, leaving the lamia to brighten the world just that little bit.
Serra is a druid, one of the few surviving members of an old and respected order. No dancing around the forests naked or chanting to spirits here, she shares an integral and unbreakable bond with the forest itself. There's no rituals or prayers or sacrifices, simply a mutual respect and understanding. She helps the forest flourish, and they provide her with protection should she need it.
So on the edge of the forest, she runs a quite successful tree farm.
Being a druid doesn't mean she's obligated to live in some log cabin and dress in furs. She quite likes living in modern confort, and with her powers and enterprising young mind, she soon realized there were few better ways to spread the forest's influence than to send the young saplings and flowers afield, to be planted in and gardens and on street corners, brightening everyone's lives no matter how far from the forest they may live. She can make a living off of it, too, which isn't a bad bonus.
