Imagine a world, ruled by darkness but challenged by light. The demon lord and the hero, a tale as old as storytelling itself. One day, it manages to experience peace... New lands are settled... New technologies developed... Several millennia pass by. Wars still break out, but cities are established and manage to hold strong. Magic is common, with most people using it in day to day life or being completely immune to it's effects thanks to them lacking the aforementioned magic. Civilization develops, cultures change... And now you can see the world Shelly lives in. A thriving, very modern world with high buildings and a bustling economy that spans the world. Electricity is used alongside magic to help out, and valuable materials are collected by adventurers fighting both in the wilds beyond the cities and dungeons found elsewhere in the world. Shelly just so happens to be one of these adventurers, signed up with the adventurer's league to harvest monster parts and materials that are hard to come by.
But let's back up, it's great to learn about the world, but what about the girl? Well, it started some 20 years ago...
The Wolkins are a type of beast shifters, lupine features adorning their bodies in human form and possessing the inherent ability to transform into a "feral" wolf form. They are distinct from demi-wolves, which are simply humanoids with wolf features. They are joined in their transformation abilities by all sorts of shifters, from Rabbikins to Cheetakins to even more odd types like Octopukins. Regardless, a pair of these Wolkins fell in love and got married before having some kids, a litter of adorably grey-furred pups. And the runt of the litter was named Shelly. Now, Mr and Mrs Koba were the adventuring sort, happy to go on "hunts" for rare monsters to fund their children's education and keep their bellies filled... But also for the sake of how exciting adventure can be. Sure, harvesting 100,000 medicinal herbs isn't exciting in and of itself, but harvesting a golem's heart because you took an herb from it's grove makes that collection quest a hell of a lot more fun. They trained their kids in the basics of combat, just to ensure they stayed safe. Shelly was quick, given her smaller size, but she didn't have the ferocity the rest of her family had when it came to combat. But she was exceptionally stealthy, soon becoming rather skilled with the dagger and concealed blades. She was odd, since she'd continue using her dagger even in wolf form, but she found it easier then using her claws and fangs. She understood her weapon, and that was enough for her. For magic, she can use some shadow spells to hide in shadows better or release a blast of dark magic. She was overall a C+ student when it came to magic, an elective course at her highschool that she took with her siblings. It was odd, being so much shorter then people 5 minutes older then her, but she didn't mind. She loves her family, and is happy to help many of em out if they should need it. When they all graduated, only 3 of the 9 Wolkins from the Koba family decided to go into adventuring. The three eldest, all boys, went into butchery of all things. Their keen noses were great at telling if anything was wrong. The other three went into various prifessions, with one becoming a teacher, one dedicating her life to the study of magic, and the last one becoming a simple librarian. She was good at keeping the rules, with her keen ears and sharp nose making it impossible to be too loud or sneak in food wen she's on duty.
Adventuring wasn't the easiest for the short wolf, at first. She had to train her agility mostly, and get better at seeking out weakpoints. She's still fairly novice to this whole thing, but being able to greatly increase her speed simply by transforming did make the earlier stages easier for her. Especially with her dynamic knife skills, making it easier to keep pace with the older and more experienced group of adventurers that sometimes joined her. But she has a stable enough income, has a great deal with a motel to be able to sleep and eat there whenever she needs for a monthly cost, and has a good relationship with both the local weaponsmith and magic tailor. It's incredible finding someone that can make clothes appear and vanish when a shifter transforms while still giving them decent protection enchants...
In addition, she is a little bit of a nerd, especially about famous and powerful adventurers. Don't get her started, or she will yap for hours... Especially if she's visiting her favorite cafe or playing a game on her phone that even somewhat relates to adventuring.
