Well, when you're the lowest of the low, the only place to go from there is up, right? Granted, Shimi isn't the LOWEST, but she sure feels lik she is at times. She's painfully shy and anxious, doesn't have any real skills that set her apart from other people, and has the social life of a kid that sits at the back of a classroom by themselves. All of that combined with her pudgy figure, drooling problem, and pesky lisp give her very little to like about herself. All she really wants to do is find a way to make a friend, someone she can rely on and who will always be there for her. Someone she can cling to forever. And considering how needy and obsessive she can be, said person probably won't escape her easily, or at all. Just don't fight against her too much, or she'll have to find a more... permanent way to keep someone with her.

And yet, it gets worse. Shimi's appearance is all a facade to cover up what she truly is. An abyssal shapeshifter masquerading as a much smaller and cuter squid in an attempt to fit in better with surface dwellers. While her shapeshifting skills are very limited, it's a convincing enough disguise to fool nearly anyone. But nearly all of her problems carry over between forms.
