Tanuki

The Japanese raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides viverrinus), also known as tanuki (狸 or たぬき?) in Japanese, is a subspecies of the raccoon dog native to Japan.

The tanuki of Japan from time immemorial were deified as governing all things in nature, but after the arrival of Buddhism, animals other than envoys of the gods lost their divinity. Since all that remained was the image of possessing special powers, they were seen as evil or as yōkai, with tanuki being a representative type.] However, since the tanuki of Japan do not have the fearsome image that the leopard-cats of China do, unlike in China their image took the form of a more humorous kind of monster.

There are many legends of tanuki in the Sado Islands of Niigata Prefecture and in Shikoku, and among them, like the Danzaburou-danuki of Sado, the Kinkyou-tanuki and Rokuemon-tanuki of Awa Province (Tokushima Prefecture), and the Yashima no Hage-tanuki of Kagawa Prefecture, the tanuki who possessed special abilities were given names, and even became the subject of rituals. Apart from these places, there are few cases where tanuki are treated with special regard.

Sitoki

Though originally from Sado, her family had moved to the north to live in Hokkaido shortly after her birth. Unbeknown to Sitoki, her parents had been rather...mean for tanuki, and were banished from Sado for some of the horrible tricks they had played on the humans of Sado city. Granted, Sitoki did not really have any opinion of her birth land, as she had lived in Hokkaido her entire life.

Living amongst the Ainu, Sitoki had a rather unique take on her life. She was almost entirely in her human form, something her parents actually hated her for doing quite a bit. The Ainu are traditionally animists, believing that everything in nature has a kamuy, or natural god on the inside. The most important include Kamuy Fuchi, goddess of the hearth, Kim-un Kamuy, god of bears and mountains, and Repun Kamuy, god of the sea, fishing, and marine animals. Being a Tanuki, an animal not found in Hokkaido, they were revered as gods still, but Sitoki especially, simply by virtue of the fact she was a 'human animal'

Granted, she didn't last long in Hokkaido. Not by any evil or malicious thing she would have caused. She simply gained wanderlust as she grew older, and has long since been found wandering, wearing the coat that her childhood Ainu friends made her.

Abilities

Shapeshifting: Unlike the Kitsune, who can generally only shapeshift into other living things, Tanuki are absolute masters of shapeshifting. They can change into any object big or small and appear to work and function as the object for any amount of time, as long as the sacred leaf is attached to it in some manner.

Young tanuki often find themselves having a bit of trouble changing till they grow much older, though. Either unable to shift their tails or their color on the object, the young tanuki often get teased by humans for being 'foolish' with their powers. Sitoki is still a -bit- young for this, and has a hard time disguising her leaf, which can be knocked off to change herself. Mind you, her human form has been took so long that -this- is the default for her.

Conflagration: An ability she can only use in the fall, or if she has a collection of red leaves on her person. With a careful tapping into nature, Sitoki has learned the art of conflagration, able to set, throw and even erupt into flames with a red leaf in hands, for as long as the leaf is burning, without any harm to herself.

Wind Teleportation: Using a brown or yellow leaf of fall, she can whisk herself away in a whirl of leaves, appearing wherever she wants. Brown leaves can be used rapidly, though only take her a short distance. Yellow leaves take her long distances, but take a little time to use.

Big balls:....Ok, this might not be so much an ability as a physical trait. Tanuki have -big- balls, and she is no exception. Though she is still a hermaphrodite, bearing both sets of genetalia, her testicles are quite oversized and she does produce an....excessive amount of semen because of it.

Items

Autumnal leaves: She always keeps a number of the three leaf types on her person, though mid summer she tends to run out of red leaves, needing to make her fires by hand.

Sacred leaf clips: those clips in her hair are actually preserved leaves from the butterbur plants, home to the Koro-pok-guru, also known as the Poncle. She had befriended the poncle at a young age, and they used a special lacquer to preserve the leaves for her, allowing her to shapeshift as she pleases, without fear of losing her green leaves at any time.

Fluffy coat: No, not her tail, you dips. The coat was a special coat made by the Ainu and given to her when she 'came of age' in their eyes. Though it looks sort of short and thin, it offers complete protection from the elements in the winter, allowing her to feel warm and comfortable no matter what the weather is.

Because of this, mind you, she doesn't wear -anything- but the coat.
