Somnambula was born thousands of years ago, in an small unamed village in a desertic region then known as Anugypt. Since the fall of the herioc Star Dreamer to the paws of a gigantic Sphinx, the village and all of its surrounding lands had been under the control of the terrifying beast.
Born from a noble family close to the local leadership, Somnambula was raised as a priestress to serve the Sphinx in all of her needs. She recited her demands, she cleaned out her fur and participated in various ceremonies honoring the Sphinx's greatness. As a reward, she was spared participation into the annual sacrifice lottery, and eventually graduated to the position of high prietress, the highest position in the land, above the king, but below the beast herself.
Her new position, on the cusp of adulthood, allowed her to gain a close bond with the Sphinx, and the Sphinx gave her a collar made out of Glopaz, a magical focusing stone that gave its bearer the power to utilize raw magic. It was a power she used well, a power that allowed her to get close to the younger son of the King, Prince Hisan, much closer than was appropriate. The Sphinx learned of that illecit relationship and, furious, rigged the next lottery so the prince's name was chosen.
Torn between her love and her duty, Somnanbula pleaded with the Sphinx to spare her lover's life, but the goddess would not listen. In a moment of desperation and rage, the priestess turned her learning and powers against the feline monster, shrinking her down to the size of a kitten.
Without the proper magical energies in place, part of the great temple housing the Sphinx collapsed, and Somnambula begged Hisan to run away. Consumed by the great magic she used and without any equine lifeforce nearby once her prince ran away, the prietess fell into a deep slumber, her name becoming nothing but legend over time. A brave savior who sacrificed her life to bring back peace and freedom to Anugypt.
Over the next decades, none dare adventure close to the former temple of the sand deity. At fear out of respect for the deceased, then out of fear for the curse that was rumoured to be held within its walls. As centuries went by, the temple became forgotten by history, rattled by sand storms until little remained of its construction. New rumors emerged, of a forgotten city, of riches beyond any imagination. Some say that if you listen carefully in the desert night, you might hear the pained meowl of the lonely guardian of the sands.
As a new millenium approached, the rumors had taken on a new form, that of forgotten history, valuable to historians. More serious researches took place in the area the temple once was, and the slumbering body of Somnmabula was found under ruins. As soon as a lifeform touched her, she rose, and so did her guardian Sphinx. None who explored the ruins returned to tell their fate, but afterward, the site was closed down due to mismanagement, and according to the locals, the meowling had ceased. For now, it seemed, the desert was sated.
But out there, a new presence lurks, lost, confused, and who very much would like some ceremonial wine.
Since she was freed from her curse, Somnambula travels the world, looking for people to help, with her pet sphinx always by her side. The events of her liberation filled her guilt, and she put a spell on the deity to further limit her powers, at the price of tremendously increasing hers. She can alter her sphinx and her's forms at will to better integrate the local population.
With her magic, she roams the land, and solve trouble, whether mundane or paranormal, at every corner. While her original legend may be forgotten, a new one is being forged around her. She is who sees all, who rewards the good and banishes the wrong. Her brilliance lights the way and burns the unfaithful. She is Somnambula, goddess of the desert.
At her core, Somnmabula is a highly extroverted and optimist individual who tries to see the best out of everyone she meets. She is fiercely loyal, and her pet, the fallen Sphinx, is like a sister to her. Having been raised in what amounted to a theology, she is regards rules and morality to the highest standards, and view events, past and future, as guided by a higher force to whom she is the messenger. If someone is good, she will be most helpful to them, and try to make their lives even better. But if someone is actively doing evil and isn't merely misguided, she will attempt to purge them from the face of the earth, using the full strength of her powers until the unpurity is gone.
Thanks to her Glopaz necklace and the power stolen from the Sphinx, Somnambula is gifted with many powers.
