Tardopterians are a hybrid species of lepidoptera and tardigrade, or what is known as the 'butterflies and caterpillars' species, and the 'water bear' species. The particular breeds in question may have been an experiment gone wrong, or some animal hidden from the world for the longest time, or even an alien species! Whatever they may be; they are here. Those suffering from entomophobia will have to get used to them.

Grubs:
Grubs are the Tardopteran larval name, and by far the most abundant. Often called 'Grublings' when in groups. They bear eight little nubby legs that help them crawl around. Each nub has retractable claws; useful for carving, climbing, grabbing, combat, tools and grooming. Their antenna are their noses and ears, and are very sensitive. Biting strength is more than any dog on Earth. They do have a unique humanoid face, (minus the nose) but they can spin silk from their mouth! Useful as glue or string. Strange thing about grubs is that they are born with fully functional reproductive organs. They are super stretchy too! They can also harden their skin to be nearly indestructible! Plus, their diet determines their size. Some could weigh ounces. Others, hundreds of pounds up to a thousand. Various other abilities otherwise have been recorded on an individual basis. But overall the society they formed is eusocial.

Chrysalis:
The pupa stage of their growth. They have a choice to go into this growth stage when they want, but would otherwise need to in order to preserve their DNA and help strengthen future generations. (More about that below) The cocoon they weave would help support their growth and transform into something wonderful. Most of the time the Tardopteran inside would sleep. But they would like to talk to someone since the cocoon is pretty boring, and neigh impregnable until the hatching day.

Brood angels:
When brood angels overpopulate a place, they would carry the chrysalis's to another place to colonize so that they would not have too much competition in their current home. Brood angels are slightly humanoid in appearance, but bear feathery wings that enable them flight. A male and a female would pair up, find a place to settle, and mate. Once the male expends all his seed into his lover, he dies. The female would lay hundreds of eggs each day until thousands have been produced. The mother, or 'brood queen' would teach her children as much as she can until she dies, usually after her sperm store is completely emptied and gave birth to the last egg.
Some brood angels on rare occasions may refrain from breeding duties, and become a hierarch/matriarch leader. They also live longer in a life of celibacy. Since brood angels have a more developed brain than grubs, they can take responsibilities of inventing the technology of future generations or make political decisions. But when they do breed, the males would have to breed with as many women as possible until they die or when they run out of sperm. And the females would mate with the males to produce as many eggs until their deaths too.

Their future:
Egg stage of the tardopterians. Usually brightly colored and chromatic orbs, the incubation and/or gestation would determine the healthiness of the egg, including the generation to the line of mothers and fathers. They refer to their eggs as "Our future". A batch of eggs produced in a single laying will all have the same color patterns. Eggsample: One batch may be blue, another will be a dark red, and another may have tiny white stars on them.
Since grubs can breed with one another, different generations would determine the health of the eggs. For example: a 3rd generation male and a 26th generation female. The female would bear the genetics and produce the eggs thanks to the male. Generations by their definition is the line of grub births that originated from a brood angel. Grubs born from them are 1st generation. Grubs born from the 1st generation are 2nd generation grubs. More generations down and genetic material would degrade so much it would cause infertility in the males! In fact, genetic degrade happen faster with males, so the female tardopterian population outnumber the male population. Hermaphrodites are said to be immune to genetic degrade.
But brood angel males have adapted a way to become fertile, even when they are a very high numbered generation. The nucleus in each of their cells would double, and the ones that are the weakest would be recycled. The recycled DNA would then be used as the base material to make the male fertile again and be able to renew the generation number for their future.
Additional:
There is so much to these species than what is glanced on the surface. Each individual has a unique personality, but they tend to form colonies when they can. It's possible to meet a single tardopterian or several of them. They are very intelligent. (Or at least the ones that are.)
But the way to find out more about them is to come up and saying "Hi!"
(Or let them come to you if they think you are interesting.)
