"What, you expected some old hag? Oh, how they've tried to demonize me!"
For those of you that are too absorbed in the romanticism of the Disney adaptation, perhaps it should be made clear that the tale of The Little Mermaid is far more tragic than the colorful little cartoon may indicate. In the original tale, things took a far darker turn after Ariel requested the aid of Ursula, and it resulted in the demise of her and her 'beloved'. Though what became of the Sea Witch? She survived, stealing the dying mermaid's beauty and drawing it into herself before destroying Atlantica as originally planned. Hundreds of years later, she remains in her beautiful state, still bargaining with seafolk and land dwellers to secure more souls to sustain her youth.
A powerful witch with little to worry about due to the fall of not only Triton's kingdom, but that of Poseidon as well at the hands of
Sideon, Ursula is allowed to roam the land and sea freely to barter and hunt, providing services few alchemists and spellcasters are capable of in exchange for the most precious traits. Of course, all of her services have additional terms and conditions, usually a time limit to complete some task with a promise of a refund and the ability to keep their purchase if the customer succeeds. If they fail, however, they surrender all they have to this deadly seductress, often leaving them to her cruel desires and a slow death stewing away within her body, never to know the pleasurable embrace of the life after as she seizes their soul to grow stronger. Her ultimate goal is to gain enough power to stage a coup and overthrow Sideon, seizing the title of 'Ruler of the Oceans' for herself.
As such, it should be stated that Ursula, while incredibly powerful, is not the strongest of the ocean's denizens. Despite being rather combat-capable and often donning armor, she is easy to best if fought on land or surprised by a strong or large enough opponent in the sea (note that her 'human' portion is proportional in size to that of a woman standing at roughly 5'8"). She usually leads others on with various forms of personalities, commonly taking men in with a shy act before putting them in their place while comforting other women with a maternal charm that is otherworldly...
