"There is no power without it's price, no deal without it's downside, no light without the darkness. There is always an effect, always a response, and always a cost that must be paid before these great acts must come. If you are crafty though, you can find a way to ensure that you gain what others lose, without any danger to yourself. All you need is cunning, and a little bit of patience." ~ Overlord Markesh, first public speech

This speech was given after his sudden and rather brutal rise to power, which had occurred so suddenly that nobody had time to react to it. He had been evaluated the year before as a threat not worth mentioning, a half rate magician who used more sleight of hand than innate arcane power. When he assaulted the empire though, he easily decimated armies number in the thousands without slowing down in the slightest, showing a mastery of magic beyond the limits that had seen in the past nine hundred years. Nobody knew how he gained his power so suddenly, and anyone who attempted to find out was quickly eliminated, ensuring that his reign would continue for many centuries.

Now that we've gotten all the seemingly unrelated stuff out of the way, let's get into the story that you're actually wondering about. You see, Rain wasn't always quite like she is now. Point of fact, she was one of the stronger magical beings out there at seven tails, though she was a bit of an idiot at times, she had a good heart, and was always willing to help out those around her, assuming of course they asked her politely and weren't too rude or creepy about it. She wouldn't create money for anyone, nor would she help with anything that looked like theft, but she was always giving food to those who needed it, helping people build houses and other structures, generally being a good little kitsune.

Nobody really knew when she had come into town, nor why she spent so much of her time there, but all of them were happy to have her around since it made their little village more prosperous than most others. Now it was while she was out making her rounds that she saw a rather strange person in town, wearing a robe with the hood up, putting his face in shadows and making him quite difficult to recognize. He walked with a hobble though, and Rain felt that she should at least help him over to the local inn if nothing else. The man seemed surprise by her willingness to help, but accepted it readily enough, the two of them making their way slowly down the road. As they were about to part ways, the man offered to introduce her to a relatively new game that he had acquired, if she would be interested in it. Since she had been wandering most of the day and had no plans for the evening, she readily accepted this offer, so the two of them found an out of the way corner to play her first game of chess.

Since it was her first time, she quite obviously failed to win, surprising and delighting her at the same time since she usually won in the other games that the villagers played. The man too, was quite understanding, and offered to play her at at least one game per day until she felt more confident about her skills. Pleased with the idea, she readily accepted the offer before making her way back out. She returned the next day, as promised, to make another attempt at the game, and while the two of them played, they got to talking, the man revealing that he had been run out of his previous home because of his inability to properly wield magic. She felt a little bit sad for him, but soon returned to concentrating on their game, managing to lose quite spectacularly once more. Things continued in this way for the better part of a month, the kitsune managing to lose completely each time while learning about her companion, and revealing some things about herself as well.

Something she eventually learned about him, was that anytime he got drunk, he would inevitably begin crying about the loss of his former home all because he couldn't use magic like he should be able to. One time, while they were playing, it happened again, and the kitsune couldn't help but feel sorry for him, so she made him an offer. She would lend him a portion of her power, and try explaining the how of things properly to him so that he would eventually be up to at least a third class magician. He sobbed out his thanks for her generosity, and promptly passed out onto the table. She, being the honorable kitsune, met up with him the next day, and once she talked through his hangover, the two of them wandered out to a nearby field for the practice. Taking one of her tails very carefully, she converted it into magical energy and just as carefully began siphoning it into her companion, making sure not to overload his pathways. To her surprise, his body was quite receptive to the power, and it wasn't long until a seventh of her power was, at least temporarily, his own. She then began to instruct him as to what he was doing wrong during his spell attempts, the instruction continuing until it had grown quite late, the light beginning to fade. This was when things went wrong.

When she attempted to retrieve her power, they were both seemingly surprised to find that it had become lodged in his soul. Rain knew this could happen when a magic user used enough power that wasn't his own, but she wasn't quite sure how to properly remove it without harming him permanently. While she was thinking, he himself made a rather odd suggestion. If the two of them could synchronize a type of magic he'd heard of, one that opened the magical pathways of two people and allowed a free sharing of power, then she should be able to naturally begin drawing it back out of them. She wasn't sure if that was true or not, but she trusted him, and she followed his theory through almost perfectly once she knew what she was doing. Even when it was opened though, she was unable to dislodge the power that had become stuck as a part of his soul, this obstacle frustrating the kitsune a little, but still, she didn't want to hurt him. After a few moments, he suggested that she might be thinking about it wrong. Maybe magic power was more like a liquid than a solid. And odd concept to her mind, but she was willing to try a few things to make sure he didn't get hurt.

This second attempt also failed, though it had allowed her to at least shift her magic power a little. Encouraged by him, and her own ideas, she carefully began pushing more of her power onto what she was trying to retrieve, in the hopes that she would be able to start cycling all of it back into herself through that direct link. That was what he had been waiting for though, so as she began pushing her power in, he used what he had been given to rip the magic forcibly from her body, her surprise lasting too long as he grew more powerful than her. When she was down to only one tail though, he stopped and closed the link, a wide grin on his face. He thanked her for her cooperation in giving him power, and as a gift, he would not kill her. However, since she knew his secret, he had to alter her mind, and if she was recognized as a kitsune, it might get reversed. Using an old spell he had learned, he changed her shape from a full kitsune into that of a demi form, and sealed almost all of her memories away. While her mind reeled from the power that had been unleashed on it, he quickly slipped away, watching as she slowly wandered off into the forest.

Her story doesn't quite end there, as she still has to make her own way in this world. Luck was with her after she lost her powers, and she managed to stumble into an association of demon hunters after several days. Since she hadn't had anything to eat or drink, nor a bath, she looked quite disreputable when she first fell through their door. Even though most immediately recognized her as a kitsune, despite her appearance, they took pity on her because of her situation. They learned only a day later how little she really knew anymore, and decided among themselves to give her some help, and a job. Sure, she has only one type of spell with two shots at most, and it's no good on anything more than ten feet tall, but a size shifting spell comes in quite handy when used properly, and despite appearances, she was quite adept at it. Now, having a home and friends, she's starting to make her way in the world, with what little power remains to her.

One of her rather odd interests is in card games. Mostly of the gambling variety for some strange reason. This doesn't mean she's really got the slightest clue how to play at all, or care about the bets that usually go with it. She just seems to have quite a bit of fun with the complete luck element present in those kinds of games. She's not really sure why either. It does however, give her something to do in her off time.
