Vaylie

In many ways Vaylie is a typical example of her race, the Viera. She is quite tall by most standards, standing above the average human male at 6'1, and her long, chestnut furred ears add another foot to this. Fawn haired and olive skinned, she could be considered quite exotic to those unused to seeing Viera. She is perhaps not as lithe as most of her kin - her time studying books and fondness for human food has added a softness to her figure, especially evident in her wide hips and generous bust. Like all Viera she wears long stiletto heels as a matter of practicality, having no issue maneuvering with them in terrain that would be impossible for a human. Her dextrous fingers and toes are each clawed and surprisingly sharp. Blue is her color of choice, represented proudly in her scarf as a way of advertising her chosen profession. And what is this profession, you wonder?

Blue Mage.

Vaylie was always something of an odd girl. From an early age she had a fascination with fiends bordering on obsession. She would eagerly listen to the stories of battle told by her clan's elders, vividly imagining the ferocious monsters and fiends from such tales. Her peers regarded her as something of a monster-nerd - always drawing strange creatures, her time spent researching fiendish beasts while others pursued more practical activities. She joined the hunting parties at the earliest opportunity, but was never satisfied with the few unvaried threats that surrounded her people's ancient home. So, as many young Viera do, she set out to the lands of humans when able to properly fend for herself. She has become something of an adventurer since then, although she is no Warrior of Light. She dabbled for a time in several of the common disciplines of war and magic - red mage, monk, scholar, astrologian - but never felt truly comfortable in any of the common guilds. This changed for her one day when she met a peculiar man who set her down a new path in life, teaching her the basics of a rather obscure form of magic.

To call it an unusual choice would be putting it lightly. There are no blue mage's guilds left in the region or even the continent. It's not that the art is unheard of or unknown, it is simply rarely practiced. Scholars of the magical arts have mostly written off the pursuit of blue magic as a fool's errand. Why risk life and limb studying from monsters when there are far more accessible options available? Black and white magic are both tried and true and red magic combines the usefulness of both, and all can be taught in a controlled environment. Yet, for the few truly committed to studying this art, the rewards can be great. The techniques of fiends are as varied as they are potent, making blue magic perhaps the most wide ranging and adaptable of all the magical disciplines.

She immediately felt the allure of this profession. To learn from and study monsters - the world would be her classroom, monsters and fiends would be her teachers! She embraced blue magic with rare enthusiasm, learning what little the man could teach her before heading off into the wilderness in search of fiends. The early days were difficult, Vaylie finding herself needing to flea from many a beast that would have her for dinner rather than a student. However, she eventually came across a rare opportunity - a job in a Colosseum as a waitress, oddly enough. Rumors of rare monsters gathered all in one spot were too enticing for her to ignore, and her exotic appearance as a Viera was the only qualification needed for the position. Her time in the Colosseum afforded her the rare opportunity to observe a variety of monsters in action without putting herself at risk. Simply witnessing magic is not as effective a means to learn as being subjected to it, true, but it's much safer! She took copious notes of what she observed and practiced whenever afforded time to do so. Alas, nothing good lasts forever. Eventually she had studied all of the beasts kept their sufficiently enough, and a change in management made her think it prudent to tender her resignation. So she set out on the road once again, seeking new beasts to add to her journal and to restore the legitimacy of blue magic.

Vaylie keeps a journal of every fiend she encounters, cataloguing their habits and techniques for posterity. Her journal includes detailed sketches and as many notes as she can manage regarding her encounters. She is somewhat obsessive in this endeavor, desiring to compile all that she learns for the aid of other blue mages and monster enthusiasts. Habitat, diet, social structure, weaknesses and of course magical abilities - all are important to her, and she will make every effort to understand a new fiend to the best of her ability. Pursuit of such knowledge is a dangerous endeavor, her passion for learning having gotten her into some sticky situations in the past. But she's managed to survive thus far, adhering to the blue mage's creed of "True learning is worth the risk."

Current Spells Recorded in her Journal:

Goblin Punch - Learned from the remarkable little beastmen, this is a staple for any aspiring blue mage. Requiring minimal magical reserves, the mage is able to channel their energy into their fist and deliver a surprisingly potent blow! This attack is generally as effective as a trained warrior's axe, but still requires the mage to put themselves in harm's way to be of use. A risky proposition as she lacks a warrior's armor.

Aero - Conjuring a potent gust of wind, this spell allows the blue mage to engage their foes from a distance. Though not as destructive as the classical black mage spells fire, lit or ice, this spell is quick to cast and can easily knock a man from his feat and across a room.

Aero 2 - More aero! Vaylie observed a fierce wind gigas to learn this spell, a more potent version of Aero. Blades of wind sharply twist and cut around the target of this spell. It requires a sizable amount of mana to cast, however, so Vaylie is judicious in it's usage.

1000 Needles - Peppers her target with exactly 1000 thin, razor sharp needles, dealing 1000 damage. Is 1000 damage a lot? Don't ask me, I don't know how much hp you have! One of her go-to spells for reliable offense, but it can be difficult to aim against agile targets.

Magic Hammer - Watch out, fellow spellcasters. This spell blasts directly at one's magical reserves, sapping the energy needed to cast spells. Quite handy in a mage's duel yet utterly useless against opponents who rely on brute force.

Flash - No, she doesn't literally flash her opponents you perv. This spell releases a burst of bright light, blinding all who see it save the caster. The effect is brief, but it is an effective way to catch an opponent off guard or make an escape if needed.

Devour - Is this even a spell? She didn't think so at first, as there is nothing inherently magical about a massive goobbue swallowing up a poor soul, but observing a diminutive sylph once accomplish the same feat has convinced her otherwise. She's witnessed more than a few adventurers meet their end in the belly of a fiend and cannot deny the effectiveness of simply eating one's opponent. It isn't something she's personally attempted yet, but she believes she understands the theory behind it enough to try.

Bad Breath - One of the strangest spells in a blue mage's repertoire. The caster mimics the foul fumes of a marlboro's breath, belching forth a potent cloud of magical energy. The effects of this spell are quite varied - some victims are poisoned, others are confused. Some are transformed, either turned to a toad, pig, imp or shrunken as if the victim of Mini. These effects are all temporary. This is easily Vaylie's least favorite spell, though she acknowledges it's usefulness. It leaves an awful taste in her mouth and has made her incredibly nauseous during practice.

Level 3 Flare - Perhaps the strongest spell she knows but also the least reliable. Learned from watching a certain demi-behemoth in action, though it's effectiveness is far reduced in her hands. It can be either utterly devastating or entirely ineffective depending on the strength of one's opponent. Worse still, casting this requires the most mana out of any of her spells. Effectively this reduces it's usefulness to being a hail mary, last ditch effort in a conflict.

Nothing to teach her? Then she's no use for you. But hey, check out these neat people recorded in her journal. Vailyss
