The term 'Aurelia aurita' doesn't mean much to most people... but those who know their marine life would instantly recognize it as a type of jellyfish and one of the most common jellyfish species.
Zeri has been classified as a living abnormality... while she is a jellyfish (and a ridiculously large one at that) she's also part sentient humanoid... despite her apparent lack of any sort of brain, she still has all five senses and is quite capable of human speech, though it does sound a little slurred and muffled.
No one really knows what made Zeri what she is... perhaps experiments, or some sort of freak mutation? Whatever it is, she's here. And she's quite the dangerous little thing.
Zeri's body is roughly proportional to that of a human... though, if she had legs, she would be about seven feet tall. So, she's a big girl. No one's ever taken time to measure her tentacles, but it's thought that she can stretch them well over seventy feet if she tries... and, unlike a normal boring jellyfish, she has a bit of control over them and can steer them towards her prey. Most of her tentacles are equipped with nematocysts (stinger cells) that fire when touched, injecting a potent neurotoxin... made even more dangerous by her sheer size and the number of stingers she has. She also has a few adhesive cells in there, to keep victims from floating away.
Her hair is almost identical to her lower tentacles... but, she has no stinger cells in her hair. Nope, every square inch is loaded with adhesive cells, to aid in grappling extra prey.
Despite her fragile appearance, she's pretty tough when she's in her native environment. She's quite capable of taking down very large predators, and any damage dealt to her body is swiftly regenerated.
Unfortunately, her legs don't work that well, meaning that if she wants exotic prey, she usually has to wait for it to go swimming, or try to lure it in... easier said than done, considering that most instantly recognize her as a jellyfish. She can try to chase them, but it's pretty sad to watch. Poor thing.
Oddly enough, the girl is quite sweet. She can keep her cells from firing if she wants, so she can still give hugs and snuggles and hang out with friends in general... well, if she had friends.
