Nell has no knowledge of her parents or her origins. She was found as toddler by a merchant, wandering the streets of the slums, barefoot, malnourished, and wearing nothing but rags. The merchant's wife was struck with pity, and so she took the child in. Her husband objected at first, but was quickly won over by Nell's cheerful disposition and demeanor. However he refused to officially adopt her, and so she never took on the family name. Though this always bothered Nell, she never pressed the issue, grateful that she had been rescued from what would have certainly been a horrid and brief life in the gutters.

While Nell does not know who her parents were, it is highly likely that one or both of them was talented in the use of magic, for as she entered puberty and adolescence, Nell developed a skill with the arcane arts that is typically passed along from generation to generation. However, such talent DOES sometimes occur spontaneously... In any case, Nell's guardians were supportive in her interest in magic. They couldn't afford to send her to the venerated academies and schools for such arts, but the merchant's dealings with artifacts and rare items allowed Nell access to many books and other resources, so she was able to educate herself more or less adequately, albeit somewhat by trial and error.

As she reached young adulthood, Nell grew restless. One day, she announced to her guardians that she wished to set out to find her own fortunes. The merchant and his wife raised no objections, and so a week later, with a pack full of supplies and a small purse of coins, Nell left the city where she had grown up, without looking back.

Nell is now 20 years old, and still traveling, though she has recently begun to wish to find somewhere to settle more permanently, at least for a time. She works odd jobs wherever she goes, and has acquired a fairly lengthy list of skills. Jane of all trades, master of none, so to speak. She occasionally takes work that relies on her skill with magic, but she is wary of relying too heavily on it, as she fears her lack of formal education may lead her in over her head. She has mostly kept the cheerful nature of her youth, tempered somewhat by the knowledge that not everyone is as friendly or well-intentioned as she is.
