 Lazy, self-centered, greedy, and hungry in every sense, the Astika that is known and begrudgingly adored today has remained (mostly) unchanged from his youth, when self-motivated actions made him that of a hero to his kind.

For much of his life, he was a servant, secret and scorned son of the great sister of the great Naga king known as Vasuki. He was a half-breed, though it didn't show and lived a quiet life in lieu of frequent scolding for his unwillingness to perform his duties in a timely manner. His mother and uncle were often after him for his trysts with other members of the servants in their grand home, but none could quell the hunger for satisfaction that consumed his being.

When the Kuru king, Janamejaya, declared war on all Naga-kind and demanded the extermination of all serpentine creatures to avenge his father's death at the hands of noble naga in King Vasuki's court, Astika's homelife was greatly disrupted; his kind was forced into hiding. After years, the scourge of their enemies drove Vasuki to make a call-- a life for a life. Vasuki had no children of his own, but convinced Janamejaya that he had raised Astika as his own son and that he loved him dearly. They agreed that Astika would be the first of many tribute sacrifices that the Naga would send to the Kuru kingdom. It would be the end of the mass-killings and the random murders. It would bring some semblance of peace... Of course, Astika was never made privy to the arrangement and was instead told he was going to be shipped off for his poor performance over the years. The boy never really cared much about a change in scenery; as long as he had food to eat, a place to sleep, and a place to spill his seed, he was content.

He was brought before the great Kuru king and told they would be spending much time together over the next few days. The naga took the opportunity to try to sate one aspect of his hunger. Astika made quick work to seduce the king and, upon getting him into bed and joining with him several times over the next week, the king became infatuated with the young naga.

King Janemejaya had never felt for anyone the way he thought he felt for Astika-- he couldn't bring himself to kill the boy and instead saw to it that he was granted even greater longevity, if only the naga would stay in his kingdom with him and live as one of his concubines. Astika didn't even have to think about it and agreed to the terms. In the following weeks, King Janemejaya wrote to Vasuki and said that the sacrifices were no longer needed, but informed him that his possession of Astika would be the new terms of their peace treaty. No more Naga lives would be lost, providing that Vasuki and his kept away from King Janemejaya's own people.

Astika was then-on seen as a hero on both sides, giving up his life as a naga to live amongst humans. He could finally live like royalty without any worry of having his uncle or mother nagging him; he was finally, truly free.
