Danpachi is fast becoming a legendary samurai. Once the student of a grand master samurai who is believed to have passed away. Danpachi is the only samurai alive known to know the Shino Ittou schools secret technique, "parting the mist". After the death/disappearance of the Shozaemon dojo's master, Danpachi would remain at the dojo to take character of it until he was confronted by a Shogun officer who would come to issue a over due land tax to the samurai, stating that the land and property of the Shozaemon dojo was now to be reclaimed by the Shogun emperor. Danpachi believe foul play to be behind this, however, as he had no ownership over the property, he rightly had no say in the matter, and was prepared to leave peacefully.

Upon being denied the right to take his masters sword, the "Kaze". When the officer attempted to take the sword back from Danpachi, he would strike the man, dropping him to the ground. The guards he was with would draw their swords, and a fight would break out. Danpachi would be the only man to leave that dojo alive, save for the officer, who pleaded for his life and ran away. Danpachi would leave the dojo that night, convinced that the Shogun was in some way responsible for his masters fate, he would set out on his own to find the truth. It would not be long before his actions at the Shozaemon dojo would reach the ears of the Shogun emperor, and soon a warrant for Danpachi's arrest would be issued, along with a bounty which hired swords, and headhunters alike would begin searching for Danpachi.

Laying low, while investigating his masters disappearance, Danpachi would begin taking work as a bodyguard. Staying close to the Shozaemon dojo by living in small villages around the town of Osaki in the Matswara Shigenobu province of Hizen (where the dojo is located). No one knows who Danpachi is, however, they all know of his alias, the "fireflies samurai". As the legend goes, they say he appears during the night while the fireflies are out, keeping weary travelers and innocent villagers safe from bandits. So when your walking at night, fear not the darkness, because the darkness will flee in fear of the light which comes with the fireflies.
