Derek Abernathy became obsessed with eating and exploiting mythical and bizarre creatures after an experience with a mermaid. He occasionally struggles with the moral aspect, but not frequently enough to put him off the idea.
The Man
In contrast to his cousin CE_Hunter, Derek is defined by absolutes. He's a bit on the short side with scraggly brown hair, green eyes, a bit skinny, and a career sailor.
He's also a bit of a nervous wreck. He's been suddenly thrust not just onto land but into the control of a fetish for and constant hungry desire for the magical and bizarre. He also avoids people generally, not because he has no interest but is also severely lacking in tact and confidence. His facade is maintained only with constant mental blocks and refusal to listen to the screams of his victims.
The only place he feels entirely comfortable is on his tuna boat, and even that's at risk seeing as mermaids abound. Nevertheless, he's competent at his job and an expert at sailing, and it's the kind of singleminded focus navigating a storm or fixing a potentially deadly mechanical problem that allows him to stay sane in the face of screams for mercy.
Derek's need to avoid his conscience leads to him being much more ruthless, coldhearted and cruel to his victims. Allowing them choices and showing them decency humanizes them, and if he wants to enjoy the fruits of his labors than sympathy is something he must avoid at all costs.
Derek has begun learning magic from Count Benedict D'Finger's Tome of Elder Magic.
