Pop quiz: What do you call a spellcaster who specializes in learning wild magic cast by monsters in the world using her powers of observation, analysis, experiment, and mathematics?

"A scientist, of course!"

The principality of Selsia, ruled under the benevolent auspices of Marquess Rutherford B. B. Cuthford, has been a noted center for magical training, study, and research spanning nearly two hundred years. The rich academic legacy of Selsia has produced some of the finest magicians in the world, as well as training many educated scholars and spell warriors. Selsia lies strategically situated on the wide, slow-moving Conahuga River, making it an ideal crossroads for trade and exchange of ideas and goods. Fair climate, temperate weather, and vast agricultural flatlands permit the city to support a large and healthy population, and much of Celsia's greatness may be attributed to its remarkable citizenry. Magical institutes of the city special in teaching white and black magic, spacetime magic, and blue magic -

"By which you mean science."

- Blue magic. Although rather oddly named, blue magic is the study of wild magics innate to natural monsters in the world. More powerful spells cost comparatively more mana to cast and are rarer to find (let's be honest, human civilizations wouldn't exist if flies could cast Ultima at will). As with biological taxonomy, new spells are constantly being discovered by the intrepid blue mages of Selsia -

"That's scientist! Rhymes with giantess!"

... and then you have Noelle Robinson, who keeps insisting that she's a scientist.

"A thaumaturgist, to be exact. Bringing scientific rigor to the study of magic just makes sense, after all, if we accept that magic can be understood. I've started to record and codify the various blue magics I've learned into my lab notebook here, but there's so much more to learn! Science is fascinating, although the study of magic can be dangerous especially in this branch of thaumaturgy. Can you believe that it's tradition for blue magicians to learn their magic by being struck with it?!"

And therein lies much of the danger of blue magic. All blue magics are learned by monsters in the world using them, whether targeted on the learner, observed, absorbed, or even ingesting and digesting the monster using it. This presents a significant occupational hazard; many monsters are poisonous, dangerous, highly aggressive, or an unpleasant mix of the three. While a rugged adventurer might shrug off Goblin Punch, a new student to the discipline would be reduced to ash by Beta and even the strongest of veterans can be felled by sufficiently powerful magic such as Level 5 Death. It is also suggested that blue mages should not attempt to cast Self-Destruct, Detonate, or Me Bomb.

At eighteen years old, Noelle has recently graduated from basic magical training and elected to continue higher studies in the science of wild magic. Her sponsorship to the Selsia University of Thaumaturgy was sponsored in part by a senator friendly to the family, although she does have to contribute part of the funding towards her education. Noelle firmly believes that all natural phenomena can be explained by rational laws and that it is the purpose of scientists to help discover these laws. When she is traveling, she often wears the outfit depicted in the picture: mismatched glove on her left hand with a sleeve warmer on her right, belly-baring blouse, jade arm bangles, rings that contain a reservoir of mana, a short skirt with lacey hems, and a split cape worn more for style than protection. Brown leather strapped sandals cover her small feet, complete with thigh-high white silk stockings. Noelle's hair is a silvery white, rare even amongst the cosmopolitan Selsians, and her large, liquid amber eyes peer out from a small face set with delicate features. A brown pouch contains her most common traveling accessories, namely flint and tinder, spare gil, and some pocket potions and ethers. The hexagrams?

"Hexagrams are all the fashion rage this year in Selsia!"

An only child out of a large clan, Noelle's father and uncle served in the Dragoon Corps of Selsia while her mother was a Ninja of some reputation. Noelle's family had high hopes for her to uphold the martial tradition, but Noelle herself favored studying and reading over the physical arts in spite of some athletic ability. She has many friends in the Selsian schools but is somewhat introverted by nature, often coming across as quiet, thoughtful, and a bit reserved. She'll jump at the chance to learn new spells from the wild - but then, don't all blue mages?

"For the last time, it's scientist!"

Semi-Perma Vore
(Not doing this anymore because my RP partners pointed out that it was limiting my RP instead of producing more interesting RPs.)
