Shadow the Hedgehog was created half a century ago to be the ultimate life form, capable of both curing humanity of its woes through immortality yet at the same time capable of destroying it through the awesome power of the Chaos Force. Everyone he knew and cared about was either killed or imprisoned one fateful day, while he himself was captured and sealed in cryostasis because of how much the military feared the very being they had helped create.

He was eventually awakened from his sleep by the megalomaniacal Dr. Eggman, and pretended to care for the Doctor's schemes, all the while trying to exact revenge on the human race, so as to fulfill the promise for vengeance he made to his best friend, Maria, just before her demise. He almost succeeded, but some carefully chosen words made Shadow realise his memories were faulty; she had wished for him to save and protect mankind, not destroy it. Shadow, in his quest to save the human race from the very thing he had brought about to destroy it, seemingly sacrificed himself.

It was later revealed that he survived, and his memory was almost completely gone apart from that one promise to protect the Earth and its inhabitants from all who would do it harm. He would join whoever or whatever would serve this purpose best.

Shadow is wired into the Chaos Force, which runs through all living things. It gives him a source of awesome power, making him durable, ageless, and giving him a whole variety of powers. While he can summon reserves of it from within himself, without outside assistance, the natural chaos levels in his body are only strong enough to sustain his lack of aging.

Accordingly, he has taken up consuming other life, so as to absorb their chaos energies into his own and thus sustain his wide array of abilities. His natural stretchiness comes in handy here, enabling him to consume someone with any orifice and digest them all the same.

Whether Shadow is gentle or not in this regard depends on what part of the timeline he's in - if it's during the SA2 timeline, Shadow's heart is blackened with hate and he could care less about anything besides the planet's destruction. If it's post-SA2, Shadow is much more pure of heart(though he hides it with a gruff exterior), and prefers things to be consensual.

Personality: In his SA2 rendition, Shadow is heartless and cares for nothing apart from fulfilling his promise of vengeance. He is cold and shows little emotion other than a deep sorrow/anger pertaining to his lost friend, Maria. In his post-SA2 rendition, Shadow has become far more kind deep down, willing to help others out and focusing on the greater good, but he tries to hide it by still acting cold. Shadow is very intelligent, and his speech reflects this due to its proper nature. Very rarely, Shadow will be blunt.

Powers and Abilities:

-Chaos Control: Shadow can use up some energy to move through time and space so quickly it's like he's teleporting.

-Chaos Weaponry: Shadow can form a variety of weapons from pure chaos energy. These range from short bullets of energy called chaos spears, to long-term weapons such as swords. Shadow can also just send the energy out in a raw, unconcentrated form - a Chaos Blast. The longer he sustains a weapon, the more energy it drains.

-Durability: Shadow's body is built to last. As Sonic learned the hard way upon kicking him once, Shadow's so strong he feels like he's made of brick.

-Strength: In line with the above, Shadow's makeup and chaos enhancements have made him incredibly strong, able to flip over a bus with just one hand.

-Inhibitor Rings: These rings keep the Chaos Force within Shadow in check. Every golden ring he removes increases his power slightly, with all four being removed unleashing a huge amount of power. Shadow becomes nigh-unstoppable if all four are removed, but the effect wears off quick and he's left exhausted.

-Absorption: A meal doesn't just digest; Shadow's body doesn't produce waste in the way most people think of it. Everything he devours truly does become a part of him. He can even absorb a person's soul, if they're not careful. He can call on the raw power and abilities of all he's absorbed to give him an extra boost. (Optional: He can take on part of the appearance of his strongest victims, especially when he's using their powers; he may even take on some of their personality) Absorption can manifest as height/muscle/fat gain.

-Energification: Shadow can absorb a person without even eating them, provided he's given enough time to engulf them in an energy field. The energy field will convert the person and even their very soul into energy, which Shadow's body quickly absorbs into itself.

Weaknesses:

-Shadow runs on chaos energy. If his reserves are really low, he'll make himself weaker with each attack.

-Hubris. As much as he berates Sonic for arrogance, Shadow is no different, and as such can sometimes give the opponent an edge by letting his guard down.

-Master energy. The Chaos force is actually divided into two energies: Server and Master. Server is the most common, and it is what Shadow draws upon. Master energy is very rare, but is embodied in things such as the Master Emerald, which can either amplify or nullify server energy. A character who can utilise Master energy will be able to take Shadow's trump card away in a split second. (This is why in some darker versions, Shadow desires to absorb Knuckles and try to manipulate the Emerald himself)
