Premise
Imagine your world. Yep, earth as a whole. All the continents, the countries, the politics, the money, all of it. Now, Let us imagine your average fantasy world. Demons, monsters, angels, elves. Everything you could think of, all invading a world.
Now...what happens if you take the former population of the fantasy world...and put it into the reality of your daily life. Add in a few thousand years of strife, turmoil, and finally acceptance...and you will find the world where most, if not -all- of the monster live in, whether they are a contributing member of society...or something still haunting your nightmares.
The Setting
Now, this isn't so much the setting, but the concepts that make this setting work. Obviously, your all going to imagine, right away, that this is a world ruled by all the monsters, with people being ate willy nilly. Sure, about a thousand years ago, that would have been fully acceptable to think of, as was the idea that the world was going to end, when monarchies were also the most common form of government.
Lets think about this for a moment though.
If a group of lions starts attacking and eating humans, what do the humans do?
They slaughter them.
So, what if a group of monsters started attacking, oppressing, or eating humans?
Exactly.
There are more humans than most other monstrous races. Most humans can breed like rats, and the only other races that -may- breed faster end up being killed by the smarter races anyway. Nevertheless, humans are the dominant species on the planet, whether any monsters like it or not.
So, what do you think happened? Of course many humans instantly wanted to just wipe every monstrous being off the face of the planet. A few rather big wars later taught the humans that this endeavor was a bit..well..stupid. Monster beings were intelligent and had a good deal to teach humans, and vice versa.
So, about 1600 A.D, Humans began attempting to invite beings of other species to co-habitate with them. They extended an olive branch, so to speak. Needless to say, it was not till about 1800-1900 that the monsters actually began to accept this, and though many of the monster races still live amongst themselves, the modernization of earth rapidly began to show them that though humans were...well..not much in comparison to them bodily, they have technology and industry and creature comforts and thousands of other things that the monster races didn't have, simply because of a lack of manpower, resources and etc.
That brings us to today. Yep, 2012. Sentient Monsters and humans have been living in harmony for nearly 200 years, and there even is no longer taboos of humans falling in love with monster beings, or monsters living among humans and contributing to society. Mind you, of course the more proud races and the more...vicious still refuse to live amongst the humans, but they tend not to cause too much trouble. So...you could just as easily be walking down the street of a city, and find a hot dog stand owned by an elf, who is talking to a drider, who is late for work as it is, but is having too much fun chatting with his friend from the office, a plain old human, and none of them are arguing or calling each other a freak.
Laws
This part of the setting does get its own special little part of the profile, because I feel like if these aren't addressed, people might expect the wrong thing from certain monsters.
Lets get to the basics though, shall we? Monsters have to follow laws the same as humans do, since the humans are the ones setting the laws. This, of course, has also made a lot of 'monster lobbies' that also fight for the rights of monstrous beings, preventing inequality and helping to allow both sides of the argument to be happy. Every country is a little different, but the world has come to a general consensus on what is acceptable and not acceptable.
Of course...not all monsters follow these rules. With this in mind, there will be a division in the profile that states which monsters follow and don't follow the rules, so there is not confusion on anyone's part. Nevertheless, lets go over the basics, shall we?
*Monstrous beings of a sentient nature -must- abide by all laws, rules, and regulations that humans live by, without question. They are to be law-abiding citizens, and will be tried and punished in a similar manner to a human. Furthermore, as long as they abide by these laws, they similarly are protected the same as humans are, given they are a citizen of the country, pay their taxes, etc etc.
What this basically sums up to is that if, say, a drider wants to live in a community, they cant just build a nest wherever they want and start snatching up children for dinner. They have to buy property and live in a house the same as anyone else. This, however, also means that people cannot refuse business of them, and cant enslave them, and...hell, they are basically given all the same rights a human is.
Now, some of the specific rules
Flight: Flight is perfectly legal, as long as the flight-bound being in question has a license, and follows all FAA regulations pertaining to no-fly zones and stays below the flight zone for commercial aircraft.
Magic: Humans cant do magic. Other monstrous being can. The rules are numerous and specific, but mostly account to. 'as long as your not killing someone or endangering someones life or free will with it, your allowed to perform it as soon as you become of age within your species and show competency.' Basically you need to get a permit to do anything like big flame spells and such.
Dangerous species: This doesn't always apply, but certain species are inherently dangerous, simply because they could 'Kill on accident'. Any sentients who fall into this actually are registered in a governmental agency and have to carry a small micro transmitter at any time. This is a very new concept for government agencies and there is a huge debate on the liberties and idea that the government knows where they are, but for now the sentients agreed to this, as those that fall into the category agreed, given that they -know- this is happening and it is only used to track them in cases of emergency.
Now, obviously this is only a fraction of things in the world. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
